Front wheel bearings

Post by feetuplad »

Hi Brand new to the forum (good to be here)
There's a grumbling from my front wheel bearings on my 1998 LX DT model. Are the wheel bearings easy to replace? Any pitfalls anyone knows of?
It's a job I've done plenty on other cars (106, 206, 306) I've owned but never on a 406 which I've just bought.
Cheers

Hi mate,
the hardest bit is getting the Bearings out of the hub/carrier,
there pressed in, its either a garage job to have them pressed out or being brave and brutal,

ive got them out in the past on some cars by prising out the big circlip and persuading out the bearing with a lump hammer and big socket, bit of a ball ache tho tbh,

Cheers for that. I'll likely give it a go - I've done them on bikes and other cars. I'll get the big hammer out!

i did one of my wheel bearings a month ago. I took the hub off myself and then took it to the local garage and got them to press it in only cost £15 and had the bottom balljoint done as well. Wasn't too hard to do just a question of getting the driveshaft nut/bottom balljoint/track rod end nuts off. I drained the gearbox oil off as well as it needed changing anyway. I did it this way to save money the parts didn't cost much about £20 for the wheel bearing. reckon it would be 2 hours labour if the garage did the job. Good luck with replacing it let us know how you get on.

All sound advice and you were right, I had to go to my trusted garage and get them to prize the blighter out. I've spent a bit of money there lately (a new clutch in the wife's 306 estate) and I think that's why they popped the bearing out for free. It was a day's work all in all though and I did pull the drive shaft out and have a dollop of oil to clear up!
Job done though and the bearing grumble has disappeared.
