Hi
When i took the discs off my 406 i didn't have to take the caliper off. What i did was jack the car up, tyres off, take the small grub screws off make sure front wheels are chocked and car is in gear as well if you prefer. Next thing is to back off the handbrake shoes inside the discs by using the adjuster inside the disc there is a small rubber grommet on the outside of the disc behind where the wheel usually sits once you take this off you can rotate the disc and line the hole up with the adjuster and what you do is use a flathead screwdriver to turn the adjuster round and you will be able be able to wind the shoes in and then being careful you should be able to manouvre the disc out and you have just enough clearance to get the disc off without removing the caliper. The first time i fitted new discs and pads it wasn't till i saw i few posts on here that i realised there was an easier way and you don't have to go through the all the business of taking the caliper off and having to remove those awful bolts the 16mm one at the bottom and the guide pin bolt at the top and having to undo the brake pipe and then having to bleed the brakes afterwards.
There is a how to guide on here by mjb this link has pics and probably explains it better than i could:- viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7219
Jasper and steve earwig did a handbrake adjustment how to as well obviously you are not doing handbrake cable adjustment but this how to shows very clearly how to line the hole up with the handbrake adjuster pictures 3,4 & 6 are the ones to look at so maybe have a read of this too:- viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13956.

If you get stuck with anything let me know and do another post on here. Hope you get on alright. Are you replacing the handbrake shoes as well? Mine aren't great have more shoe on one side than the other had to sand a little bit off with some fine sandpaper.

As far as i'm aware you have to take the hub/bearing off to get to the backplate which means the the hub/bearing will be damaged when you take it off. I think you need a puller as well to get it off. Good luck with it. My backplates are a patch work quilt of fibreglass where i've had to patch it up. Its not a very good design. You would think you would be able to replace the backplates quite easily. lol

just had a look at the haynes manual a three leg puller would be best. Don't think they cost too much £20+

Hi
Just found something on youtube. Shows you how to replace a wheel bearing on a 406 if you fast forward to the bit with the bearing puller you will see what to do. Hope this helps.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMvJ64gufI4

I think your hub maybe slightly different from d9 different number of teeth on the abs ring but the centrecap should come off just the same just be careful and don't go too mad bashing it useful something with an edge on it or a soft drift to tap it out. Does the centrecap in video look the same.?

I've never had to use a puller to remove the hub on a 406, the ones I've done have just pulled straight off by hand after the big nut has been removed.

If you are struggling and don't have a puller, put the wheel back on and use it as a lever/puller.
