Just bought a P reg Diesel 406 mainly for the trek to work - Manchester to Leeds.

Anything to keep an eye on? It's done 180k but feels pretty good, turbo, otherwise pretty basic. Seems to need the expansion tank topping up, about two days after I bought it, not since (five days).

I filled it and have done 280 miles on a third of the tank or so. Normal? Is the gauge pretty honest or is it one of those that lies about where the half and quarter marks should be!

Only problems I have are:

Passenger electric window winds down but not up. Well it will if you help it! Motor?

Radio (4030) display is dim, so dim I can only just read it. Fixable?

Can I add a CD Changer to this model?

Offside side light is out, easy or do I have dismantle the headlight?

Clutch is a bit stiff and quite near the bottom, adjustment or replacement? No slipping tho.

Oh, hi guys!

Hi mate, welcome to the gang.

You're better off fitting an aftermarket Cd or MP3 player to your 406. It's a lot less hassle than a changer.

I'd always recommend getting handbrake or clutch cables tightened before going to the expense of replacing the components. The Haynes guide is pretty crap, but it does try to explain how to tighten the cables yourself.

Pity, can u get aftermarkets that work with the radio stalk on the column?

Will try the Haynes manual too!

The dimness can be cured by levering the display out and popping in a new bulb - about £1-2 from a dealer, and aftermarket stereos can be made to use the stalk with some sort of adaptor. The same company (sorry can't remember the name) that does the fascias can do you a stalk adaptor, apparently Halfrauds can also order you them too.

Lights are a pain to change but don't require dismanteling. Just unclip the cover then the bulb holder. The cheapo Halfrauds bulbs are a good match for the standard ones.
