Yup ive already asked,
the Reply was, the 406s get written off for the slightest little thing, parts are too expensive, Mark them as a un-economical repair, its the cheaper option,
ive seen them get cat-c d for a little dent,
its stupid realy,
Most probs insures look at them as a poplular car cheaper to pay out than Repair,
as with the Taxi scenario Maybe they Tar them all with the Same brush,

the high cost of parts, i cant really understand this, i dont think the 406 is an especially hard car to get parts for (bar the type c display) most parts are easy and cheap enough, especially now with my stash of spare parts full to the ceiling in the back shed. Cant this be something when applying for insurance have you got a stash of spare parts.

I could be synical here and speculate that there's some dodgy dealings going on, maybe a consortium of 'government approved' manufacturers pushing up the groupings on manufacturers that aren't in their 'club'...

Mind you, insurance generally is a f*cking joke at the moment, those of us who are law abiding and responsible are being forced to pay for all the wankers driving 'round without insurance. I've been driving 21 years and never had a claim, got about 18 yrs NCB, yet if I were to have a bump I'd be raped by the insurance mafia for no other reason than they know I'd pay it, 'cos I don't fall into the category of law breaking, drain on society, scum  . Seriously dudes, inflating the prices year on year to compensate for all the uninsured drivers isn't a solution, it's just going to cause more people to drive without insurance, and therefore worsen the problem, is that really so difficult to see?? The solution to getting everyone to buy insurance is to make it affordable, not push it even further out of reach!!!!!!

Futher added to this is the complete lack of proper analysis of the client, people like us who look after our cars, ensure that they're properly maintained, know how to drive according to conditions etc are much less likely to have a bump, and are much less likely to make a claim for a minor incident. But of course if the insurance companies started out handing out genuine discounts for such stuff it'd be less money in their already stuffed pockets!

Here here Dai, very well said

I agree wholely, infalting prices to compensate for the uninsured pushes more people to run without insurance
I've seen it openly admitted on forums, that people say if the insurance goes up anymore they'll not bother paying

I'll probably get flamed here, but it's like the goverment with all the cutbacks, they say they are doing it to rescue the economy, but how does putting loads of people out of work, meaning they need subsidising and have no money to spend, actually help the economy?
As Dai says, make it more affordable and get more people paying
Same with the economy, put money in, get people spending, which creates more jobs, and so on and so on

That all depends on where the parts come from. Yes, your 406 could be repaired fairly cheaply using budget parts, but lets be honest - if it's an insurance job that we aren't paying for, we want the best & I've been noticing a few body parts on Ebay lately (as I'll be replacing the bonnet if she stays long term) & there are some expensive prices on there:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Crash-Repair-P ... =684403064

Painted bonnet £330

Painted wing £160

Bumper £60

Headlight £65

Foglight £30

1 Front bumper moulding £25

That means at those prices, a light impact on the front corner would cost £670 to fix - before the labour has been added. Seeing as they already know that they're probably looking at a £1500 whiplash claim for every person that was supposedly in the car (amazing how full they are in an accident) it's no wonder they'd rather write everything off nowadays. Don't forget they still get a pay off from the salvage company that takes the car too so they probably spend less that way.

That's not completely why it was so expensive - the 406 is still an expensive car to insure. My insurance quote I put in the other day still came out significantly more than newer & higher spec Mondeos & Zafiras. Lets also not forgot that our very own Mr Plod managed to get a quote for a Zafira GSi for less than the cost of insuring his HDi.
