MOT failed, brakes

Post by D9406 »

Just had pierre MOT'd this morning, failed on out of balance rear brakes. One disc nice and shiny, one dull and rippled. Parts quote of £63.15 inc vat for discs and pads so including MOT cost £97.65.
Pleased with that.

Clutch changed @110k, bottom pulley changed, cam belt changed, EGR blanked, cat removed, front springs changed.

Congrats on getting it through the mot, however not wishing to piss on your parade but....................

The issue here appears to be the fact that one of the calipers isn't working as effectively as the other, hence the imbalance, hence one shiny disc, one dull
What you really need is to get the caliper reconditioned on the side with the dull disc
I paid £20 a side to get a set recon'd

Good point, I'll pop the pistons out and polish them up with wet and dry, lube everything and bleed then job should be a good un.

Ferodo pads and Brembo discs. Should always get them, best combo in brakes, and they aren't the best brands in the braking industry for no reason ;)

Brembo max discs or easycheck discs
Ferodo ds performance pads or premier pads

Found the problem. OSR disc pads wouldn't move in caliper. had to use a hammer to remove them, pins corroded to hell, but came out easily, so even if the pads could move they couldn't slide on the pins. NSR was the same but wasn't working as well as the other side, which also wasn't working. :)
Luckily pistons were lovely and free as were the calipers on the guide pins. So new discs, pads, pins and springs with hour and a halfs work I now have a 406 which stops. Handbrake still crap though, might have another go at that. So 12 months ticket for less than a ton in total, parts and MOT, dead chuffed.
