rear suspension problems,

this rear end on my 406 is doing my nut in now can anyone help,

ive checked the wheel bearing thats ok hand at 12 oclock and 6 oclock theres no play,
ive checked the Anti-roll bar bushes they dont look posh but theres no play in them,
drop links look in good nick no play in them,

If have the wheel on the car and have it on the ground and pull at the top of the wheel 12oclock straight both hands
theres play and a clunk
when the cars up in the air theres nothing,
the shocks are new,

anyideas

is this a sighn of top links failing ?
ive had a bar in everything whilst it was up in the air and theres nothing everything is tight
the play is only there whilst the weight is on the wheels fault is on both sides,

it didnt fail its mot on this fault but iwant to put it right thanks inadvance

exactly my symptoms few months back when jasper changed it. on the floor there was play but when jacked up in the air there was no play at all :?

cheers mate,
did you have any noticable noises ? clunks rattles and any sway ?

this is doing my head in imight end up scraping this its getting abit beyond safe round corners

sounded a bit like there was golf balls bouncing about in the boot 8)

dont be daft scrapping it. which car doesnt have problems ? :lol: :lol: :lol:

at least 406s are cheap to put right.

seriously the car is dangeraus anything over 15mph going round a slight bend and the back end will fish out
it pulls the front end over the sway is that bad
iwill change the top links if that dont solve it iwill break it

my mate only had the car 5mth before he parked it up and walked away from it ican understand why now
he paid £1,500 for it from belevue car auctions so he must of been more pissed off than what iam with it,
shame tho as for its age its pretty clean one of the reasons why i put it back on the road,

you will soon get that sorted mate.

have you had the springs checked ? anti roll bar itself ?

maybe wheels or tyres could cause this ?

Tyres are new mate around 6-8weeks old there some weird brand possibly there from india there called Duro or something
the front ones have decent makes on for the grip,

springs are good shocks are new,


ivejust got this message off amate,

Compress the lower arm with the trolley jack and check for play in the top link -you wont be able to tell or see the failing part unless the lower arm is compressed,

top link will cause the tyres to wear if they fail you will also notice the car will feel loose at the rear end,
as the top link does the camber on the peugeot 406 models,


dont know if thats right but iwill change the top links and see if theres any improvement 8)

sounds about right to me mate. change them yourself just remember to put inner bolt back same way. this one adjusts the camber .

jasper marked mine up with blue paint and a small paint brush.

i wouldnt wanna get those bolts back in a different place. :shock:

a 4 wheel allignment is about £50 :shock:

ican get a wheel allighnment done for free mate so thats not a problem
iwill mark up the pivot bolt on the top link and put it back in same place if that dont cure it iwill let my mate check the alighnment

the wheel on the drivers side rear was rubbing a little on the wheel arch liner ive sorted that but thats making me think the camber is out or top link is throwing it out thinking about it,

Hi

Your problem with the back end could be something to do with the tyres. If they are enduro tyres i would change them as i had a set of these on the back of my car about 4 yrs ago. You would go round the roundabouts and the car would feel like it was going sideways. Took the car to the local peugeot independant he took one look at it and said its the enduro tyres. knew what he was on about ex-master pug technician at the local dealer. Serviced most of the cab drivers 406 hdi's where we used to live and said he had quite a few cabbies that came in with rear end problems and after sepnding ages looking at them he said it was just the tyres. He said they were rubbish tyres. If you do a search online they don't get a very good write up.

When you said the tyres were a make sounding like duro i had alarm bells ringing in my head! if the tyres have a bit of tread left maybe wait till they get down to 2mm then bin them and get yourself something better. or if you are a bit flush do it now.

I changed from these tyres to Avon ZV3 and there was a marked improvement.
I just though i'd let you know my experience of these tyres anyway I had the same problem.....

Hope it helps. Like you i've got a few rear end prob's. Changed the top links, drop links , a/r/b bushes. Still have a little bit of sway on the back. Shocks seem ok although they've done 100k and not been replaced in the last 5 yrs. Springs look ok no corrosion . The only thing i haven't checke yet is the bottom arm and the trailing arms. I think i might need a 4 wheel track as it hasn't been checked for about 2yrs.....

yup they are indeed enduro theyve not been on the car long ive noticed one of them is getting worn in the middle
there only less than 8wks old
iwill throw some other tyres on and see if theres a differnce,
ithink these tyres are budget ones maybe Remoulds from india or something they do look shite to say there new :(

I know how you feel. I seem to be spending money on this car every month now. Thinking about cutting my losses with it this summer. There doesn't seem to be much advantage in having a diesel car now with the fuel being 7p dearer than petrol. Costs about £800 a year servicing on a good year. The suspension and electrical gremlins seem to be the achilles heel of the 406. When i checked the rear end a couple of weeks ago i checked the subframe mounts as well they didn't look too bad tightened the bolts up with a torque wrench and they moved a little bit but not much. Exhaust needs replacing soon before mot big hole in it just bodged it with exhaust bandage, wire and a bit of gun gum till i can afford the new one. Hole is too big to get a plate welded on it. Seems to be holding out okay with no leaks.

Back to the tyres again i bought some tyres called Prestivo2000 (budget tyre) the local tyre place recommend them they are basically a Yokohama tyre under another name. The set i've got the on the back have lasted 25k so far and there is about 2mm of tread left. So i will get another set of these. I do a lot of miles 300-500 miles a week usaully they cost about £50 each.

you have to be joking when you say not much advantage now in owning a diesel :mrgreen:

it is 7p a litre more but it goes a lot further than petrol does :mrgreen:

most 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines these days d about 25mpg if that. a diesel will double that mpg making the 7p a litre more worth it :mrgreen:
