trem1 wrote:yep its a write off. the assessors say it needs a complete engine, which is interesting cos the tow-truck driver that came to take the courtesey car back(a KA) said all they had done was take the plugs out and try and turn the engine over, it wouldnt turn over so thats it it needs a complete engine,Hmmmmmm i think it needs a few bits ie: con-rods, gaskets, new crank seals and bearings while its stripped but a complete engine is a bit OTT but not my choice. i will keep you all posted on any new developments but for the moment i gonna get fitter by walking and if i get desperate enough one of them bus thingies

i been thinking of what to replace it with but my brain keeps thinking FORD MUNDANE so i think i better wait until i get over the shock a bit :frown: :frown:
Dude... I know you left it a while before you got it back to look at, but excuse the question is it a petrol ?

Its a 2001 1.8 Petrol Niz.

Dunno about u m8, but to me, I'd buy it back from insurance and put in a 2.0 Turbo Petrol engine.
I think Foxy still has 1 for sale????

TBH... I'd take all the plugs out then one by one, I'd put a blow torch into each cylinder, t hneat up and hopefully break the seal between each piston and cylinder, Then after all 4 are done, I would try and turn the engine over using the crankshaft pulley !

If it works, put the plugs back in and get her started up, then do an engine flush... new oil , filter, and coolant before selling her and buying another 406... its a crude way of sorting it, but it will work and save you a rebuild or replacement!

As another corse of action, if you find that you face fords on regular ocassions drill some holes in your air box, the bottom half, to prevent this from happening again in the future !

whats the chances of that working niz??? i wish you had said so earlier cos its at the assessors and i been told its a write off but i dunno if the insurance is gonna pay out. if not how long do you think the engine would last with your quick-fix remedy??

cos it would be traded in asap

Boil up some light oil in a saucepan and, using a suitable funnel, pour a dollop into each pot via the plug holes. This should free up most seizures, except those that have 'welded' themselves solid.

Goes without saying that this can be a dangerous procedure and extreme care to avoid fire/scalding should be taken!

Well if you manage to free it up, then I would suggest selling her on straight away or as soon as possbile ! its only a temp solution to get the car started... you should use some engine flush and really make sure you heat the cylinders up before using the crankshaft pully! dont try and turn it over with the starter !

If it just clicks and clicks, it might be the starter thats buggered... a jammed solinoid perhaps, so maybe you can wack it with a hammer or rock the starter :D just an idea... I've had a few mates with dodgy starters on their 306's !

definatley NOT the starter, before it got taken away i took all 4 plugs out and put it in third gear tried rolling it down my drive (which i have used on numerous occasions in the past to bump start cars) but it wouldnt move so its stuck solid everybody says the con-rods must be bent and i kinda agree

but keep the ideas coming cos i still dont know if the insurance is gonna cover it
