Aftermarket wheel fitting

Hi chaps

My D8 is overdue a new set of tyres now, so for a while ive been pondering what to do, should I shell out probably near to if not more £100 for a set of tyres for the 15" steelies on it at the mo, or spend around the same on a decentish set of 17"s with good tyres

My vote is the 17"s as sets come up all the time locally to me for around the £100+ mark, theres actually a decent set of 5 spokers for £60 for sale up the road

Anyways i'm fairly clued up as to what I need, 4x108 pcd, Its the offset thats making me do my homework, I'm assuming most aftermarket multifit etc wheels have an offsent of around 38-42, and the 406 needs 13-23, I'm guessing I will need at least 15mm spacers?? and if so im assuming I will need 4?

And as well as longer wheel bolts?

Sorry if this has been done to death, I just need a bit clarification

Another worry is that most people selling alloys don't have a clue on offsets, Am I right in thinking most alloys will have it stamped in the back starting 'ET'

Can't help you on the spacers, as it's been many years since I used them ie 20 odd years ago on a mini, and they may have changed

As for the offset, yes, the ET number will be stamped on the inside of the rim, and is the offset

Worth noting though that they won't always have ET stamped on them, but the best bet is to get any sellers to give you all the numbers that are stamped on the wheel as it usually isn't too complicated to figure out. Peugeot & Citroen wheels for example, don't usually have ET anywhere on them, but the 307 wheels that I had a while ago had CH4-31 stamped on the edge for 4 stud 31mm offset. Once you've got all the numbers, you'd usually spot what would be the offset once you've taken out the number of studs & the PCD measurement.

I asked a guy this morning what the offset was on the alloys he's selling, he replied saying he did'nt have a clue and they were fitted to his Mondeo, I'm guessing at least 38mm offset then as the 17"s were on my Mondeo, so spacers would be needed

Not bad for £100 quid tho with 4 good tyres, obviously spacers and new bolts push the overall price up a bit, as a set of longer tuner bolts is 26 quid on ebay, which has got me thinking should I just hold out for a set of Nimrods, as that's ideally what I want

If Nimrods are what you really want, why don't you have a word with Mr Lurch? He's looking to change his wheels on his SRi. You could either make him an offer for his Nimrods to take them when he replaces them (thus giving him a budget to work to for his new wheels) or you could offer to get his replacement wheels in exchange for his Nimrods.

Failing that, wasn't there somebody on here who had 406 Nimrods fitted to a 206 that he wanted to get rid of?

these are 5 minutes up the road, ive got a feeling they'l do well though, as my budget is about £120ish, I think they will suit mine as the centres of the wheels look the same colour as my 406

And these as they are cheap, would give me something to do refurbing them, only about 10 minutes drive away aswell
They would be going Rover Gunmetal grey if I went for these, soooo tempted to click on the buy it now, but somethings stopping me as they do look tatty, and no centrecaps
And I don't know if its just me but the wheel looks like it could have damage where one of the spokes meets the rim

1st set look great, but the page counter suggests that they will go for a fair bit.

2nd set will need spacers & possibly won't sit on the hub centre right if they were fitted to a Megane.

3rd set do look tatty, but if you're up for refurbing a set, they could be a bargain.

Not forgetting at the end of this you've got a set of wheel where the new tyres will cost your closer to £200 instead of £100 on the 15s ;)

wheels off a mondeo go straight on mate,
no spacers needed itried a set that was on a mk2 mondeo on my 406 but they looked shite so iweighed them in,

In a dilema now, my father in law had just let me swap the wheels on his 406 with mine, exackly the same wheels but with 4 new tyres on, so ive now got pretty much new rubber on as he's scrapped his now which was mad

I think I would huff him if I bought alloys now, what to do, as I really think a nice set of alloys would set it off very nicely

My advice - put the money you were going to spend aside, and save up a bit more - all the while use up the tyres that he's just given you. As soon as they're finished, you'll be set to buy alloys, and get them refurbed and/or get new tyres for them at the same time.

Yeah, Thats probs what I will do, would be better to wait until things are a bit better financially as the new addition to the family is putting a strain on everything, she's growing up so fast all the clothes we bought before she was born no longer fit
