I had the same problem the reluctor ring which is the toothed ring around the CV joint was cracked and would sometimes slip i used liquid metal at first which cured it but then a friend of mine spot welded it when doing other work on the car.

The knocking noise is probably anti roll bar links theyre about £5 each and the tapping would more than likely be the injectors.

i now know the abs rings were knackerd so sorted that no probs,founs this site http://www.ukpartsdirect.com/index.php? ... lter_id=22
thats where i got the new rings from, only other option was to eather replace outer cv joints or whole drive shafts.

Hi I'm a newbie to here and would like to say hello,
I've been reading with interest about the abs coming on at low speeds, my newly accquired 406 has the same prob.
this morning the abs warning came on and wouldn't go, I stripped the fromt sensors and cleaned up the abs rings on the cv joints but the rings look a bit ropey, so I'm thinking of changing them , there is no mention of them in the heynes manual about how to do it.

so my question for the day guys is...... is it easy to do and where can I get info on doing it.

Hi there.

There's always the possibility it's one of the rears that needs cleaning or a duff pick up. There's nothing in Haynes because as far as Haynes (and Peugeot) is concerned, the rings are part of the CV joint. What you need to do is remove the driveshaft, split off the old ring (not sure if you have to dismantle the joint to do this), clean it up, heat the new one up and slip it on before it cools too much... I think you need to check the rears first.

I have my MOT booked for Friday morning, and was wondering, since I cannot sort out my abs problem if I were to take the ABS bulb out of the dash, would I get a pass? Or would I have to wire it up to another light so that it comes on with the ignition and goes out again?

Hmmm....I read this after you posted and worried all this time until this morning. I took the ABS light out of the instrument panel last night. This morning the car went in for her MOT and failed...

N/S/F Constant Velocity joint gaiter split [2.5.C.1a]

Had an advisory for:

Damaged front fog light
Front Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases [7.1.2a]

Just shows what SHOULD happen and what DOES happen

I would have a real good look at that CV joint with the split gaitor if it has a broken ring now would be a good time to replace it.
