10W/40 or 15W/40 Oil in a HDI Engine with 119k miles

Post by GeordieBoy »

Is the 10W/40 Oil better to use than the 15W/40 oil? I've just topped mine up recently and obviously didn't know which the Peugeot Main Dealer would use, so was recommended to use 15W/40 just to top up as its not recommended to top up the oil with 10W/40 if the oil change was 15W/40.

Gonna change Oil soon tho, and prob use 10W/40 as I've told its better.

10w 40 has a better heat range than 15w 40, and is much better suited to the climate we have, but you should also take into account the type of driving mainly done, if you drive the car quite hard on a regular basis and/or do a lot of motorway driving then use 15w 40, but if you do some town driving, and motorway driving now and again use 10w 40, but if its just short town driving you do go for 5w 40
if it was my car i would use 5w 40, but thats just my personal prefferance

I'd use 10/40. I once put 15/40 in mine (think it was at 120k oil change) and it was noticably less responsive and slightly worse on fuel. It did make the engine sound a lot smoother thou!
