Apparently, when The Terminator was going to be dubbed into German, Arnold Schwarzenegger asked to be allowed to speak his own part, as being Austrian, he speaks German fluently. They refused, apparently, because to a German person, his Austrian accent makes him sound like a farmer.

This is yet another Thing I Learned By Watching QI.
Wow! In his films his Austrian accent can be so menacing! Yet to Germans he sounds like he is from Devon / Inverness / Ballymena! :D

I remember working in a kitchen in Fife and the Chef was from Inverness, nice old lady, but when she checked the chickens in the oven for temperature using the thermometer probe she would exclaim:

"Aye, the chooks are deed!" :D

:D

I'm from Caithness, but my parents are from the Glasgow area, so I don't really have much of an accent from anywhere in particular. There was an old taxi driver who we used to use a lot in Thurso when we were getting the shopping (not sure if he's still with us or not) - he was from Aberdeenshire (but rural) and I almost literally couldn't understand a word he said, his accent was so broad.

I now live in Aberdeen and have done for nearly 7 years - but I've still never met anyone with a similar accent.

Caithness dialect is full of all sorts of lovely words. My favourite was always "scorrie" meaning "seagull".

You wanna hear the Leicester accent round here it's bloody awful  (I don't do broad leicester, sorry, lesstaH).

Round here they'll say "int-yah" this means "aren't you"

"innit" seems to have crept in because of the Asian influence I think.

Is anybody here guilty of practising the 'high rise terminal' when they speak? this drives me up the wall  this is when the speaker adds a fashionable upswing to the end of a sentence so it sounds more of a question :?

Example: My friend drives lives in a FL A T - like you've never heard of a Flat before

The rise at the end of a sentence - is this called an inflection?

I once saw a programme on TV that blamed it on the rise of Australian soaps and movies and theme pubs in the 80s - Neighbours, Home and Away, Crocodile Dundee etc. because this is a peculuarity of the Australian accent.
Possibly because they are slightly insecure due to being ancestors of convicts, so everything is a question?

Very annoying.

They do it in the adverts of TV Burp, there are different bags of sweets and the man goes "sponsored by, Maltesers?" really irritates me.

"Whats up with your bake" = Your face indicates that you are somewhat downhearted.

"Some coupon on him" = His face was a picture / looked downhearted

"I'll knack yer melt in" = I wish to engage in combat possibly resulting in your face becoming knocked in

Fissog = Physiognomy

On the east side, Me Duck is very common from the Humber down to near Lincoln, thereafter it dies away.

West country (yes I am originally from Devon though grew up a la smoke :) ) equivalent was m'lover or my lil parrot (very far west and very old fashioned, maybe a piss take latterly). Hers handsome - good looking female, I quite like that one actually. Equally - Handsome caar look - Good looking motor, more Dorset way is the 'look' in spite of Welsh usage.

Lunnen suburbs, 'awight John' just makes me want to feed someone their own gonads, even after nearly 45 years... :(

Younger Nick what runs site is right, DiscoPol's scrawl is f'g brilliant :)
