What ICE gear have I got here?

Post by Jimblob »

Hi Guys
OK well I've got the Clarion unit in the car with a tape deck (in 2002?!) and a 6 CD clarion autochanger in the boot.
It doesn't sound bad to me, what's the verdict on this unit? I've heard of a JBL amp available for 406 stereos - will my car have this and if not is it an upgrade I could have, or is it referring to a completely different head unit?
Any ideas for getting a 3.5mm jack input so I can connect my MP3 player?

Thanks

That seems to be the way of things, you either get a single slot cd player or a cassette player with a cd changer in the boot (does anyone actually own a cassette any more?). I think the Clarions are quirky but ok until they go wrong. I seem to remember you can get some sort of adaptor to go on the feed for the changer with a 3.5mm jack socket in it, so you select the changer on the head unit and it'll pick up your mp3 player.

This seems to be it here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5074&p=52825&hilit=3.5mm#p52825

i had a tape casette, but replaced it with a cd player since the only casettes i have are the dandy warhols, learn to speak french, so the cd seemed a better option. For a 3.5 mm jack i used to recommend the venturi mini fm transmitter/bluetooth but since mine has been so phenominally terrible i would recommend a parrot kit as they have a 3.5mm jack, this is if you want to keep an original stereo in your car, alternativley you have about a billion choices of aftermarket headunits with 3.5mm jack.

What's the trim level of your car Jim? (I know I could I could probably find it easy enough but I can't be arsed  ). If you have the JBL amp it'll be behind the panel on the right hand side in the boot. Do you have the built in sat nav?

I don't have the built in Sat Nav. But I fancy it (or at least I did until I read on this forum that it's a bit problematic and I'm probably better off sticking with my standalone Garmin unit).
Trim level is GTX - I don't appear to have the JBL amp. Is this amp simply plug and play if I get one, with the Clarion unit?

nope, you need a radio out of a jbl car and then your going, unless there is a bit of bsi related stuff. If you dont use a jbl radio with the amp then youll need to fit supressors or the volume will be too high

for the same price you could probably get an alpine cd player, which will make your speakers sound MUCH better,

not sure about the JBL search never had a standard JBL 406 setup, 8)
