New Ice.

Post by johnny406 »

Got a bit bored with the standard stuff in my 406 (bloody fantastic cars :P )

Anyways already had a Panasonic CQ-C7703 which is 70w x 4 (about 31w x 4 constant power) which is pretty decent for a headunit I'm sure you'll agree.

So I bought a set of Pioneer TS G171C Components to replace the front as the pioneer website said they were a direct fit in the 406, and I plan to run these off my headunit with the option of amping them up to a 2 channel later in the year but they'll be fine they are 35w RMS 170w Peak and 31w RMS and 70w should power them nicely.

I also got on special so Vibe Slick 69.3 < Top range ones not .2 .1 so two tweeters etc. A Fli Loaded 400S Amp and a Boss Wiring Kit, for £70 odd quid which I didn't think was too bad, this should handle the bass requirements well, especially since most of my boot is gone to a 90l lpg tank and I don't really want to put a subwoofer in there.

Anyways the rear parcel shelf vibrates with my standard peugeot 6x9s in the back, so what the hell will it be like with the Vibes fully amped and powered up, it's the metal chassis vibrating for sure any suggestions dynamat, also I haven't checked do you take out the standard speaker pods unscrew the originals whack in your new speakers and screw the rubber cap on the bottom again or do you have to modify the speaker holes and can't use the original carriers/covers which make the parcel shelf neat and smart? If that makes sense.

What do you think nice little entry/Mid range system?

Thanks

Johnny

Thought I'd ask whilst I'm here.

I have an uprated big ass diesel battery on my 406.

The LPG system takes up about 15amps.

The Amplifer will take up another say 20amps or more

and then another amplifier when/if I amp the fronts. another 20amps.

Plus the electric seats I ran from the battery.

Is it going to be alright

There's a risk your alternator won't be able to supply enough juice to run all that, in which case you may find your battery going flat.

Theoretically you could fit a diesel alternator as they are usually a higher ampage output than a petrol one. Also, why not use the amp to power the front speakers and the sub (if you get a 4 channel and bridge channels 3&4 for the sub). You really only use the rear speakers as in-fill and you will get better sound staging if you amplify the front speakers and not the rear.

I also got a bit bored last weekend and swapped over my rear 6x9's. I had to make the hole for the magnet a little larger, but I just screwed them into the standard plastic undermount things and modified the standard speaker covers to fit back over. I shall try to get some pics of what I mean tomorrow when it's light.

reguards to the vibration issue.

i have 4x 12" 1000w subs in the boot of my rover coupe, and it rattled like a bugger.

did a small reworking of the install, and while it was all out i lined the boot with dynamat extreme.

not only is the rattle gone, but the base is much punchier, and deeper - an incredible improvement.

don't get me wrong, the stuff is expensive (i got it on special offer from a place that was closing down, and it still cost around £100 to sound proof the boot) but you can get a small door pack that will probably make a good difference to your parcel shelf. think its about £20.

Excellent thanks guys, I'll keep the 6x9s amped up

and get a seperate 2 channel on the front components next month or something, prehaps another Fli Loaded 400s they are cheap and seem to work quite well.

I shall line the underneath of the parcel shelf between the board and metal chassis with Dynamat or foam or something.

:P I shall enjoy my new sound system from now on anyways :)

the system sound like it would work pretty well, I have had the vibe 6 x 9's you've got there and they're great but only for the bass (I've found anyway)

I had the 6 x 9's running off a FLi 900s (older style) and it worked well but they're not the greatest for sound quality.

otherwise it'll be great me thinks

Please let me know how they sound in the 406 as I've always wondered if it'd sound different in a saloon to a hatchback
Cheers

Yes to uprating the alternator - but a definite no to a power cap, there only purpose in life is to relieve your wallet of a few quid :frown:

As said go for a diesel alternator and while your about it you could uprate whats called the big 3

This upgrade means improving the current capacity of three cables: 1) alternator positive to battery positive, 2) battery negative to chassis, and 3) engine ground to chassis. Some people replace the factory wiring; others add additional cables to the factory wiring.

I've done this on the majority of cars i've had (all except the 406 funnily enough) and it certainly helps when you start drawing more current than the system was designed for.
