Had my HDI 90 406 for 8 months now, and always thought it sounded very whiney *sp when coasting in gears...
Ive now noticed some oil on my drive, and had a look under neath and it seems to be from the gearbox area/driveshafts, passenger side.
Could this be linked to my whining gearbox?
Also how do you check the oil level on the gearbox as i fear it maybe ridiculously low.....
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Gearbox leak and whine....
There is a filler on the side of the gearbox where you can top up the oil. As far as I am aware, there is no way to check the oil level currently in the gearbox. The oil is likely to be leaking from the drive shaft seal as it fairly common for these to get disturbed when replacing driveshafts.

Quite cheap so I'm told. On other forums (205, 306, 309, etc), people generally suggest replacing them whenever replacing a driveshaft, as the above mostly use the same box (BE3) as the 406 so I'm assuming Peugeot won't have done anything to the seals in the meantime.
