Engine rattle

Post by 406Iain »

Rightio,Hello.
Ive had this noise on my 406's engine for ages now (over 2 years) and Im finally pissed off with it.Thing is,its never got worse.
EW7J4 I think is the correct code (1749cc anyway)
It sounds like a faint clatter whan you rev it (sometimes) and also sounds like a blowing sound when driving, although as above it doesnt always do it.
Its hard to describe and sods law it never does it at a garage.
Its coming from the back of the engine somewhere,a mate seems to think its an injector.I hope it isnt.
I tried getting it sorted awhile back when I discovered a split vacuum hose which I though would sort it but of course it didnt.
Anyone any faintest idea of what it could be or even things i could tighten/check/remove and clean/replace.
Id be very grateful as it makes me want to cry at the moment!

Exhaust manifold gasket leaking slightly? Although, this would make the noise more or less all the time then.

Similar thoughts - exhaust flexible coupling maybe?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thanks for the suggestions chaps.
What I might do is pop it to my local exhaust place.Ive got ramps but the front bumper is low and it wont go on them without a faff.

Quite hard to diagnose the manifold gaskets unless they are blowing all the time, but if you start the car from cold and then put your hand down and round the manifold, you may well fell a little puff of air onto your hand. They are more likely to blow from cold and also you can get your hand close to the manifold before it gets too hot.

I might check in the morn before i go out.
Ive just taken it for an "Italian tune up" (read 6k in 3rd and 4th round my favourite bit of road) and it never made a whisper (well apart from the rather pleasingly throaty engine note)
soon as I hit town again and started accelerating away from some lights in 2nd bam there it is again.

Mine is making a noise similar to yours... I think. Only does it when accelerating... I think it's the flexible joint, as the engine moves during acceleration the joint moves causing to blow

Mine also had a clatter to... It was the auxuilary drive belt tensioner pulley, might be worth a look.

More likely to be the auxilliary belt pulley. Try squirting wd40 (without getting it on the belt) onto the pulley and see if it goes.
