High leval of engine noise inside car
Hi all,
The 2.1 has a lot of engine noise inside the car, this goes away as soon as I put the clutch down so it's not the gearbox.
Could this be an engine mount problem ? if so witch one is most lightly to have gone ?

Re: High leval of engine noise inside car
If it stops when you press the clutch it sounds like a clutch or transmission problem.
Is it the same when not moving? Is it the same in all gears? What sort of noise is it?

On the contrary, it sounds exactly like a gearbox problem. As you press the clutch, you are stopping the first motion shaft in the gearbox from turning, suggesting a problem with the first motion shaft bearing or layshaft bearings.

The noise is like you get when a zorst is banging aganst the body but not as loud and from the front, its werse when puting your foot down but still there on tickover.
I'm going out later so will have another listen and see if I can decribe it any bettor.

As I said before it's like a zorst vibrating on the body, it gets louder the more I excelarate in all gears and is quiet on an even throttle, it's still there on tickover with the clutch up or down but is only a low rumble.

So, at tickover, does the noise stop when you press the clutch

Re: High leval of engine noise inside car
Sounds more like an exhaust problem, try holding the tail pipe and wigglying it about and see if the noise is there when you do that.Otherwise, look around for anything loose under the car.
If the noise is there on tickover, it must be something connected with the engine, exhaust, engine mounting, some sort of bracket broken, etc.

Or an engine mounting ( sorry I thought originaly you said it went quiet when you pressed the clutch?)

It could be the header pipe clamp blowing.
I've found on both of my 406's that the springs on the clamp can fatigue causing an exhaust leak. You can get a new seal kit quite cheaply or do as I have and space the springs out with washers!
