Hi Parcelman & Welcome
Get yourself a copy of Haynes 406 manual no. 3982. If you do your own work it'll pay for itself in no time.
2.O HDi comes in several versions 90BHP, (DW10TD) or 110BHP, (DW10ATED). 110 has an intercooler, 90 doesn't.
Not certain on this, but I think they all use the same service parts, (filters, belts etc.).
If you do a search on here for 'ServiceBox', (Peugeot's servicing software), you can sign up as an independant repairer and access lots of info about your car, enter your VIN no. & it'll tell you exactly which bits yours has. It will also let you download the 406 handbook & tell you the servicing intervals.
I think the cambelt's due at 72,000 intervals, so if you're keeping it you'd need to do it soon anyway and if you don't now its history, it's probably wise to do it sooner rather than later.
Sounds like you're looking at the instantaneous MPG, which normally updates every few seconds.
What MPG are you getting? What type of driving do you do?

hmm didn't realise AOL were still around...

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Fuel filter is located at the front of the engine, in my experience, the 90 has a cylinder with a large plastic ring holding the top on (it screws off).
The 110, has a cylinder with a nut on the top, you turn this anti-clockwise to undo the top of the filter housing (about 90deg).
There are usually two types of filter, one with a 12mm hole and one with a 24mm hole, the small one is usually the 90.
Be careful with the ring type fitting, it is easy to break off a pipe from the top of the filter housing....they cost £55 to replace.....yes, from experience
Always change the tensioner and roller when doing the timing belt.At your mileage, the water pump as well.

With regard to the MPG display, this is controled by the button on the end of the wiper stalk. Each press of the button takes you through a sequence of displays. It sounds like yours is showing "current MPG", just press the button & it moves to thr next display, hold it in for a few seconds & it resets.

Hiya mate, the only way to really check the fuel consumption is to top off the tank and reset the trip. Then next time you top off the tank note how many miles it's done and calculate your MPG. Saying I've put this much in and only done about that many miles just ain't reliable enough. HDis should do well over 40mpg (depending on the type of driving and how heavy your right foot is), and over 50 on the motorway.
PS, please turn your CAPS LOCK off
Cheers
