MOT or NOT to MOT

Post by tboy113 »

Guys.

ive got a D9 406 2.0 GLX 103k on the clock. very good body condition.. all the normal stuff.

i'm just about to get a company car and i dont know what to do with the old 406.. it MOT is due in april and i dont want to go thru the cost of getting it back on the road! im willing to spend about £200 on it but i dont want to spend it if its not worth that.

Shes never had a problem other than the normal little things...

Whats she worth with or without an MOT!!!!

advice please as she's been good to me.....

What year is it?

I'd guess your looking around 500 with out MOT, if its clean, tidy and good history your looking 1200+ with 12 months MOT, may be more depending on age.

Personally unless you know there is a major and expensive reason it will fail the MOT i'd stick it in. I think the ~£40 for the MOT is a good gamble, if it fails you have a list of points to sell it as spares or repairs which may increase its value or 12/13 months MOT and you'll be quids in.

You never know it may pass its MOT first time!

Once got a 1982 vw polo for the girlfriend. it came to MOT time, i was sure it would fail (strut top mountings etc....) it passed first time! You just never know with the MOT.

I know this is contreversial but the petrol models aren't really worth much second hand and because there's loads of them available with MOT's, it's really not worth much without MOT.

"Most" people in the market for a 406 go Diesel, so make sure yours stands out and is an attractive prospect...

Now I am preparing to be flamed! LOL! ;-)

I agree to MOT it. The 406 is pretty good come MOT time and the worst you will get is a suspension link/bush or something, maybe handbrake performance but only you will be able to judge if you think something's going to let it down here.

I'd say MOT it and try for £800.00 or something (assuming it's a T/V reg) these days you MUST advertise an attractive price and you will get loads of interest. I've just sold a 2000 BMW 316i se for £500.00 under book and the phone did not stop ringing. I also sold a 1998 318tds for £800.00 under book (with a declared fault) and got around 25 callers. There's loads of buyers looking for cheap, decent motors.

Take the under gaurd off should be easy to see if its leaking. If its burning a lot of oil you'd see the smoke. You'll find out during MOT if its buring oil.

Thats quite normal for a 406 with rear disks!

Sounds sense, should be able to get over 1k for it with 12 months ticket or few hundred with out.
