5 speed manual gear selector

Hi guys I have an 03 2.2hdi with 5 speed manual box lift up reverse, While I was changing all my split vac pipes I noticed a broken linkage part 8 in the picture is it important I've got a reverse that goes awol every once in a while and second just feels weird, all the other gears snick in perfectly but second feels a bit stretchy with maybe a hint off gritty you can never be sure it's in 2nd gear until you let the clutch out.
