I seem to remember that too.
I guess a long M3.5 or M4 setscrew could be locked in place - washer either side of back plate / nut to clamp it in place and another washer / nyloc to hold the shoe on would work, but guess how much of that I had to hand on Saturday?

Screwfix be your friend, order online and have them washers and bits delivered ready.
It's amazing how many times you will find use for washers once you have some around. Must order some more myself thinking about it; all mine get used for fixing furniture, lawnmowers, french automobiles........

A simple repair for the pulling through of the holding springs/pins is to get a longer set of pins with longer springs and reverse one of the holding washers, push the pin through it then fit the whole thing through a penny washer...this gives you the area the size of an old penny covering the hole...then slot the whole lot through the backplate and fasten to the shoe using a spring and fastening washer.
