406 Electrical Fault

Post by PeterP »

Car was not used for a week. Started it and a frying sound came from RH front speaker. Made no difference if radio was on or off. The noise was very loud and then noise came from both front speakers. I took it for an MOT and spoke to the tester, a former electrician, he suggested disconnecting battery. Left test station and no noise, put radio on and ok. After several minutes radio stopped, sound wise, although display was working. Tried to select cd or tape, couldn't. Had to get some shopping, parked and switched off, radio display stayed on with key out. Left car for 30 mins, display was off. Upon starting radio came on for a few seconds, computer display started to misbehave and a light came on the dash, picture of a seat. On way home display went on and off as did radio, stop and other lights came on intermittently. Parked at home and this time computer display stayed on for several minutes. Everything else is working; but I'm worried about a complete failure of the electrics. It's a 2001 406 Exec. Any clues would be much appreciated. I was a motor engineer for just short of 50 years, modern electrics baffle me.

Thanks for the link. Started this morning, no noise, radio working. Checked various plugs, relays etc, all seemed ok. Drove 50 miles today and all is good again????????????????
