2.1TD Engine Oil

Post by jonsowman »

Hi all,

Has anyone got the information to hand of what engine oil is recommended for the 2.1TD XUD11BTE?

The Halfords website suggests both 10W40 and 15W40 varieties for this engine, is this right and how do I choose between them?

Finally, how do I choose between a fully synth and part synth oil?

Cheers all :)

the difference in 10w and 15w is the thickness of the oil when cold ..

not sure which is thiner or thicker but thats the difference.

not sure exactly what oil for the 2.1 but i would think 10w40 over 15w40.

hi i have 2 2.1s and i use comma 15w40 i have used 10w40 and the engine is louder i get mine from car spares they sed because my executive has low miles they sed 10w40 would be ok but i found it made my engine louder so i use 15w40 sem synth same as i use in my brothers 1.9td 406 and in the morning i always start it up and leave it to tick over for abit first b4 i drive

Thanks guys, think I'll go with a 10W40 semi synth :) I don't think 15W would do any harm but I'll go with the majority vote!

15w40 is thicker when cold, so you will be wearing your engine out faster.
Infact next service I may try drop down to 5w30 Fully synth in mine for the fuel economy. I wouldn't drop any further than that though for fear of oil leaks.

If 15W takes longer to warm up and is thicker when cold, why would anyone use it?

Apologies for the ignorance, I don't know anything about oil! :)

all down to climate aspose.

colder the wether ..use. 10w40 summer, 15w40
use of 10w40 thru winter wouid be less strain on the oil pump Maybe,

Quote/from other source,
(1)SAE 10W40 and SAE 15W40 is only a measurement of the oils viscosity at two different temperatures. The number in front of the "W" tells us the viscosity at low temperature 10W max. visc. 7000 cP@-25 degrees Celsius. The number after the "W" tells us about the oils viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius. SAE 40 shall be between 12,5 - 16,3 cSt@100 degrees Celsius.
It's important to realise that these SAE spesifications only tell us aboat viscosity, not Quality.

That makes a lot of sense lozz, thank you.

My 406 is quite loud when started from cold, quietens a bit when it has warmed up. I think that's pretty normal for the XUD though.

What are the consequences of having a too viscous or not viscous enough oil in there?

Thank you all, this forum continues to be invaluable!
