Noise coming from rear end

Post by Peter86 »

Good evening guys, im after some advice. I have had this grinding noise coming from the rear of my car for quite some time, mainly when i turn right, i have taken the wheels off to investigate and it seems like the disc guard behind the disc is rubbing the inside of the disc when cornering. I changed the rear drop links and the noise stopped for a while but now it is back. Im not sure what is causing the disc plate to float into the inside of the disc? i bend it out the way but it will work its way back.

I replaced two of my rear tyres shortly after the rear drop links and one month later they were on the wire on the inside,(i should have got it aligned straight away) now i have got the 4 wheels aligned, but im not convinced.
Recently i have noticed (when i took all the interior out of my car to do a run to the tip) there is quite a loud bearin ish type rowing noise coming from the back, do you think knackerd bearings could be the cause of this? i have jacked the wheels up and spun, shook them and they seem fine? I am going to change the two rear bearings this weekend to see if this helps. Do you know if this is an easy job? are they pressed, or is it a bolt in jobby?

Car is a 1999 406 esec estate. 2.2 HDI.

Any help appreciated

Before you go spending a small fortune  The back plates like to rust and can rub on the disks, especially under cornering. Also check the shoes for missing springs...

hi steve, to be honest the back plates are not that rusty, they are in pretty good nick, i have come so close to getting the angle grinder out and cutting them off, this noise is driving me crazy.
I have had the discs off and checked/cleaned the drums out, the shoes are fine e.t.c but i havent checked for missing springs, i will have to do that.
Are the bearings a bolt in replacement?

I know they made them without com2000 so they must have come in before July 2001 :?

They'll be 48 tooth anyway.

Hope this doesn't confuse things still further, but a while back I was convinced I had a rear wheel bearing problem, but it turned out to be an oddly shaped rear tyre - looked perfectly OK, but when you ran your hand over it there were detectable 'lumps' every few inches around the circumference.

I know it sounds unlikely, but I recommend swapping both rear wheels in turn for the spare and diriving it for a few miles to check. (At least it's cheap)!

To be honest, i dont think it is the bearings either, because when i jack it up, there is no play, and the wheels spin lovely, but there is this constant drone coming from the rear end, and as i do mainly motorway miles, its really annoying me. The car needs two new rear tyres anyway, so i am going to replace them before i do the bearings (but i dont think its tyres either, as i have swapped front-back before).
I just thought maybe a worn bearing might also be contributing to my rubbing disc noise (play in rear wheel even tho i cannot feel it)when i corner, which is also slowly driving me insane.
Do you think there could be any bushes/bearings gone in the rear axle which is causing the disc cover to hit the inside of my disc?

Evening guys, i thought id let you know my findings from tonight. I took the discs off and found nothing wrong with shoes e.t.c everything seemed to be in spot on condition. When i spun the passenger side rear wheel bearing by hand it was "juddery". I removed the cap to inspect the bearing and you could blatently see that that was the problem, it was try as a bone and it looked rusty...not good. I really didnt think it was the bearing, because when the wheel was on, there was no play side to side/top to bottom e.t.c...but i was prooved wrong.
Still not sure why the inside of the disc guard rubs my disc...i think im going to end up cutting it off lol!

Oh and dogslife..you were sopt on..it was the 48 tooth

Thanks again guys

Perhaps the whole lot has enough movement (with the weight on) for the disk to touch the backplate :?

Kind of you to say so, but I think that was young master Earwig.....

Glad you've tracked it down. I suggest swapping the hub first before resorting to more radical surgery.
