My first thought was hinges too especially the first pic it looks like the one on the door pillar needs moving inwards?

Back to the clutch what sort of money are we talking here?

I think the door pillar is OK since the back door fits properly. I knew the catch moved, but not that the hinges can be moved too. Might just be time to find a scrap door and replace it with one that isn't bent.

Haven't been to my mechanic yet. Waiting for my expenses from last month to be paid first; those bloody trains aren't cheap  They aren't fast either. Or comfortable.

I remember I paid £600 (inc parts) for the cam belt and an oil & filter change doing.
Discs and pads all round and handbrake shoes and oil & filter was £500 inc parts.

On my list is: clutch, handbrake, oil & filter, and I reckon it'll be a similar size bill. EDIT: + lower engine mount.
That's seems to be down to the price of labour here... :( ...so give me a quote if you can beat it :D

Looks like a re-manufactured clutch is about half the price of a real one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181124219378
Thoughts?
Given that the 406 is just shy of 200k and is essentially scrap living on borrowed time, I'm reluctant to spend anything :x

Yes, get jasper to do it. He won't rip you off and work is first class. 10k on my new clutch and cambelt with no issues.

That said, after seeing the cambelt change done first hand, I would be relatively comfortable doing it myself now as it's not a difficult job. The worst thing is getting the plastic covers off...

As for the clutch, get Sonia to help you. She does owe you... :supafrisk:

There is a good article in this months car mechanics magazine on changing to a solid flywheel on a 2.0 HDi C5, but it all looks the same as the 406

Hey Mike. I think it's just Pugfest for me this year. Need my weekends for sleeping at the moment!

I've submitted a very long list to Jasper5 and am booked in for the weekend after next. Quite excited about it actually. Thanks for the recommendation Alex; everything I hear and read about Jasper 5 is good.

So you've been beaten to it Mike!

I'm sure Sonia would manage magnificently with a clutch kit... maybe just on her 406 first... just to get warmed up, you understand

Valeo should be releasing a solid flywheel for the 1.8TDCi MK4 Mondeo soon. Worried about vibrations and driveability afterwards though?

Well this morning I can feel a tapping through the clutch pedal, and the car is making squeaking noises apparently at random -- although I can't demonstrate that it's the clutch.

I'm a bit worried now since it needs to do 100 miles this week, then get to Acrington on Sunday :?: :?:

Maybe get it checked out as soon as possible.

If things are going to change please let me know what the situation is as soon as you know, likewise if everything is alright for sunday.

Good luck with it!

Best case scenario: it is the clutch but it holds out till Sunday.
Knowing my luck, this is unlikely.

Bad case (1): It fails on the motorway on Sunday.

Bad case (2): It fails this week down here. In this case it's scrap.

I'll keep you posted... and drive very gently.

You should drive it *very* sympathetically this week. Some think that pootling around at low revs in a Diesel saves wear and tear but it's the other way around - low revs and 'labouring' the engine causes greater stresses on the clutch and gearbox, you're better to use and change gear at 'favourable' revs (not too much not too little) and be silky-smooth with all of the controls.
