Aye, the 406 is the 90. The 307's a '52' 110 which (being the FIL's car) I intend to have as little to do with as possible, although I'll sort the eolys stuff given I have the PP2000 needed to reset the level and force a regenCaptain Jack wrote:His 406 is. Re: aux belt flapping
Crankshaft pulley arrived today. Fit it... no difference. ARSE!!!
Like Jack's the engine is *WOW* silent when run without a belt.
£30 alternator ordered off ebay.
Seems there's a number of alternators used on 406s - 60A on the 1.8, 80A on DT, 90A on hdi without AC, 120A on the V6s (with air vent!), and 150A on the other hdis. With some random alternators here and there, and about 10 variations of each power spread across 3 manufacturers (Bosch, Valeo, Mitsubishi). Some of those numbers might be fresh from my arse, but if you look at servicebox they're not far off. I'd say about 25-30 different alternators were used on 406s!
That's not counting remanufactured ones (different part numbers)
Also, contrary to what was said in the other thread, not all have clutches. The hdi90 (this one, at least) has a fixed pulley. Seems the clutches are in the pulleys themselves, and can be identified by a plastic end cap.
As an aside, I'm pissed off with having to buy a new crankshaft pulley, but I don't mind given how frequently the things seem to be dying nowadays, sometimes violently. My dad's started to split (the rubber bit, obviously), which threw the (new) belt off which actually ripped chunks ("shredded" in his words - not seen pics yet) out of the pulley outer steel!!! Thankfully he just needed recovery followed by a belt and pulley.

Re: aux belt flapping
Another important thing to look at is the connections on the alternator, there seems to be a load of variations as i found out when i was looking for one.

Re: aux belt flapping
indeed, and the wires on the '90 - this one at least - are very short. Luckily I've found a replacement which shows it in situ on another '90 which appears to be completely identicalgrasmere59 wrote:Another important thing to look at is the connections on the alternator, there seems to be a load of variations as i found out when i was looking for one.

Re: aux belt flapping
Alternator and crankshaft pulley replaced, belt still flapping
Going to get a new belt tomorrow and see if the current one's simply too long due to being stretched by the flapping

Re: aux belt flapping
Guess the belt was just knackered from all the flapping. New belt and it works fine (albeit still a bit of tensioner movement). Substantially shorter than the old one, despite being exactly the same contitech part. I need to get round to cleaning the garage...
Also discovered the bottom mount on a hdi is just as painful to change as on the V6. At least I have a vice now, which made pushing the new one in quite a bit easier than before. Heh couldn't get the bottom ball joint separated even though the nut came off ok, so had to undo the wishbone from the subframe to get the sodding driveshaft out
