Sourcing an (obscure?) radiator fan

Post by FixMy406 »

My radiator fan is on the way out, screaming like a damned soul as I drive down the high street. It certainly turns heads, just not in a good way.

All the replacements I have seen on Ebay etc. (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335461670668) seem to be for different versions of the car, where the fan controls are elsewhere in the engine, and the fan itself only has a 2 pin connector.

The fan I am replacing has a 5 pin connector, like this one: https://imgur.com/7QysBBLhttps://imgur.com/7QysBBL

This is the schematic for the fan I am replacing: https://imgur.com/CPzRh8R

The post I found that schematic on notes that it was used "from RPO 9336 until the end of production", but I can't find any sites that have parts diagrams for specific generations.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can source a new (or at least working) fan?

Alternatively, do you think it would be possible to wire up on of the 2 pin fans in such a way that the car would be happy?

Thank you for any help!

Link no worky I'm afraid.

I think this be the one https://catalogs.ssg.asia/peugeot/?lang ... aWVyPT0%3D

Together with the wiring diagram (those were the days :frown: ) those are a 2 pin & a 3 pin connector, not a 5 pin :? I wonder if the wire numbers will be the same. Looks like for an HDi 90 there are 2 fans, early with dumb resistors and later (which presumably yours is) with an ecu, er, somewhere in the fan housing. I do know PSA did some major monkeying around with the cooling fans, presumably as a result of the inevitable fires we were all warned about

I'd forgotten about this https://autoelectric.pro/PSA_ECU_2002_2007_ru.html is that your 5 pin connector? Looks like the ecu & fan motor are 1 big, extortionately expensive (and probably now no longer available) lump  Although it's interesting that the problem being addressed is the ecu crapping out, not the motor dying.

I''m not really sure what to suggest, I think I'd be pulling it out and seeing if I could introduce some oil into the bearings.

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply.

It is a 5 pin connector, though it seems to be set out as a group of 2 chunky ones (presumably power in / out), and then 3 other one, which I'm guessing are controllers of some sort.

The catalogue link doesn't give any ones that seem compatible - they are all 2 pin ones. The one with the onboard ECU is the one; an interesting design choice!

I think you are right, best bet is probably take my one apart and oil / replace the bearings. If that doesn't work I might try ripping the fan ECU board apart and using it to control a separate 2 pin replacement.

You may as well, it sounds like it'll fail sooner or later so probably best to do it when you want, rather than it fail at the side of the road on a hot day...

That's the same connector as the Russian one, so as per PSA is only showing us the connections to the loom on the fan shroud, anything else, well, you're supposed to sell a kidney and buy the whole shebang.

I guess your fan will be this E4, searching ebay and beyond I'm not seeing anything that has the controller attached, maybe it stays with the shrouf? No Idea. I hope once you get it off & apart you'll have a better idea of what's what.

I think that was in my OP (it'd take me hours to find it again), power in and out, supply to the control board and a feed out for diagnostic purposes. The fan is earthed through the, umm, plastic fan shroud?
