I wouldn't really expect to find a decent anything on the anticipated budget.

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406
Missed an opportunity last week - one of our suppliers sold his 12-plate 508 2.0 HDi SW & bought a Zafira.
It wasn't mint but looked tidy, 150k miles, was going to need a clutch/dmf soon, dpf warning light on and he'd damaged one alloy.
So a few bob to sort out but he sold it for £850
(I found out 3 days too late).
My bro's just bought an 07 407 2.2 GT HDi SW, tidy looking, 160k miles, OK apart from a dead hard disk in the head unit.
Some mug who never learns* will attempt to sort it for him, (of course), with much appreciated technical help and advice from our resident 407 guru.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406
We have a 508. It replaced the bastard 307cc from hell. Which replaced a lovely 407 2.2 petrol in burgundy with cream leather. Long story. Don't get me started...
Short version:
The 508 is a more worthy successor to the 406 than was the 407. The 508 is 'normal' whereas the 407 is so wacky and French that it makes more sense if you think of it as being a Citroen.
Driving the 2.0 140 feels more like my 406 HDi 90 than my 2.2 407. Made me realise how special the bi-turbo is.
Disregarding the different engines, I'd choose the 407 because I like the wacky Frenchness.

Re: How many forum users still actually drive a 406
Imagine a barren world where rwb sits in the corner of a darkened basement, water dripping from the ceiling, rodents gnawing at things, he's tied to an old chair, a slither of daylight casts a hopeful beam of light across his forehead whilst a slave repeatedly slaps him around the face with a large dead fish. This is his life, all his life.
This is the definition of "I like the French wackiness" of privately-funded motoring

Very picturesque
That sounds almost like the old guy in the basement eating snails scene in Delicatessen.
French? Yes. Wacky? Oh dear me yes.
By the by, is anyone else watching Cold War Motors slowly rebuilding an SM on yewtoob? Beyond wacky...

I do occasionally but its my wife's regular driver, it was mine to until I got this Merc but there are a number of aspects where the 406 is better. Its quieter and rides better, the seats are more comfortable as are the headlights. The merc is faster and slightly better on fuel which surprises me but otherwise I prefer the 406. I still have the one I drove sitting in the field, ready to go back into service if needed.

I do. It's my day to day car. Estate 110 hdi.
Now self employed I was going to get a van. Filled the back end with my carpentry gear and it swallowed everything. Don't think I'll bother with the van yet, will see how it goes.
Just need some bars to go on the rails so I can move some wood about.
So comfy and effortless driving. They don't make em like that anymore.

I still have mine 03 2.2hdi estate just got back from a 2 night trip to Lincoln 617 mile round trip drove up Monday 5 Hrs non stop the car didn't even break a sweat and a 6 Hr drive non stop again today(weds) to get back we could have been home quicker but the wife was driving and she wanted to go on the A40 so we came of the M5 on to the M50 and picked up the 40 at Ross on Wye.
The car reckons we averaged 45.6mpg so well happy with that considering there were times we was touching 80-90.

I drive mine daily, 99 plate 110hdi estate. 137000 miles.
Nothing major wrong though it will need 4 tyres for Mot.
Good solid workhorse.

Running sweat an a nut, had it 9 yrs and its never run as well . since blanking off egr much smoother especially at low revs

Not a rattle to be heard !!
you would think its been mapped the way it pulls ???
Hope I'm not encouraging the gremlins saying all this !!!!

I'm driving mine, been together just over a year, 350/400 miles a week, MOT'd last week, so looks like a long term relationship, will do a cambelt service when weather clears, was scheduled for today. 2.0 HDI, 218K miles.
