Pointy Indicators on modern cars

Post by Welly »

Saw a new French car yesterday sporting those Audi style 'pointy' indicators and thought enough in enough :frown:

For decades the universally accepted signal for a car turning or changing lanes has been a flashing orange light, that's it, we don't need this orange light to perform a silly pointy walk over in the direction the car is definitely going to take; we already know this, don't make out we're so stupid we need extra help just to be sure that left means left and right means right. Leave us alone and just make static flashing lights again, oh and make them round or square not a pencil line.

Thank you.

+1 Let's go back to indicators you can SEE.

Trucks now have scrolling indicators too.
Saw one where they'd been mounted sideways ether side of the rear door. With the hazards on it looked like it was planning on sinking.

And another thing - could we please have a different flash rate or pattern for hazzards so we know it's not the right hand indicator when you can't see both lights?

And how about car designers* change their minds about putting the world's smallest orange bulb right next to the stupidly bright and pointless DRLs so it becomes a completely pointless indicator...

Is it just me, or does that silly scrolling Aldi indicator turn anyone elses stomach...?

I sort of like them  but not enough to warrant buying an Audi.

Totally get what you guys are saying re. tiny indicators surrounded by very bright lights. I've nearly t-boned a turning Mini before because I didn't see the indicators.

I don't mind if the indicators scroll - just as long as they're bright enough and distinct enough from the rest of the lighting to be able to see from a distance, regardless of the lighting conditions.

I quite like the LED indicators on the rear of my BMW (the LCI E60 5-series actually has quite nice light units front and rear, well designed, and very easy to make out the indicators against the "angel eye" DRLs, dipped and even main beam headlights). It makes me slightly annoyed that the front indicators are still halogens, though...

... at least the "Swarm" concept hasn't made it to actual production though:

Makes me wonder who'll be the first manufacturer to make a back to basics, affordable, electric 'People's Car',
that's bang up to date with technical excellence, but none of this stylistic excess.

Mercury Cougars had them in the '60's-'70's (probably others too), although they were run by a roundy-roundy motor and a set of relays, they did look pretty cool on them to me, but seeing them on modern nazi-mobiles has put me right off of the idea.

I think you'll find parking a car with hazards on where one side of the car is obscured is illegal. They're actually meant to signify a, you know, hazard, as in "my ugly modern car has crapped out in the middle of the road here and I am unable to push it off this cliff", rather than a "get out of jail free" card for abysmal parking.

That 'swarm' idea should get in the sea and stay there, ffs :frown: I cannot stand all that "ohh look what we can do bollox" just piss off!

Anyone noticed the DRL brigade now it's getting darker? the ones who 'think' they've got their lights on because the dash is lit up like a christmas tree and the front DRL's are on  meanwhile the rear of the car is in total darkness, and that's "safe" is it? :frown:

I'm sure automatic headlights are mandatory very soon.....

Just don't say anything about front fog lights...

Talking of safe - has anyone spotted the advert for the new Bini with a huge sat nav screen in it?
It shows the driver* using it whilst driving* down the road - eyes focused on the screen, not where he is going.
And this is being advertised on massive bill boards by Bini themselves - ffs.

I was so distracted by the bill board as I drove past, I nearly dropped my phone, my map and my coffee..

I don't know what you're complaining about to be honest, last week the DVLA were doing roadside checks near me and as I made a harsh U-turn to avoid them I spilled my glass of Red Wine :frown:

It's 3D TV all over again. A lot of hype but ultimately noone cares and will demise pretty quickly.

And, yes, I *hate* those indicators. I have urges to rear end those Aldis... Well, I have that urge to rear end any Aldi but...

The problem of indicators too small to see when placed next to other lights appears to have been solved by turning off the other light while the indicator is on.
It's quite silly.

Worse than that, it's downright dangerous. It's usually omly the DRLs that get dimmed when the indicator's flashing. The headlights don't.
So if the indicator is difficult to see due to a nearby DRL in daylight, what form of ESP do we need to see the indicator in the dark next to a headlight?

And another thing.... When will someone introduce a different flash pattern so we can tell hazards from turn signals when you can only see one side of the vehicle? That would be a new feature that's actually useful.

The first thing is to enforce people to actually *use* the blasted indicators. Most seem to have forgotten of their existence. Or simply don't care...

And what's this fashion now of indicating 'right' when approaching a roundabout but actually taking the 'straight on' path :frown:
