Clunking noise from front suspension

Post by OdinEidolon »

Hi all!
I have a clunking noise coming from my front left suspension. I thought that it had to do with the drop links needing changing... but it also heppans when turning the steering wheel when stationary. What could it be?

It also happens when starting from stationary on a smooth road, or under stronger than normal braking.

With the wheel on the ground the wheel is rock solid. Could it be just the drop links? I'd love it because they are cheap!
The noise appeared about 3 weeks ago. It's been getting worse every day. I'm not the kind of guy who stresses the wheel a lot.

But may it have something to do with the fact that for the last 4 weeks one wheel (do not know which one yet) has beel unbalanced? (I feel the steering wheel wobble at 60+mph)

How do I check all that? Remove the wheel and try to move the brake disk. And then what else? Thanks for the help. 8)

Grab hold of the droplink . waddle it, see if it moves,
with the 406s being high-ish off the ground you can get away with leaving the car on the ground,
just make sure you handbrake is on and car is in gear tho, incase car rolls over you,

It can if the wheel is on,

what imean is you can get way with checking the links withought removing the wheel,
perhaps turn the steering till you can get room to the link,

if handbrake isnt trustworthy, your best off putting something under the back wheel,
if the car rolls it can hurt you,

Ok got it mate, sorry. Should the droplink be rock solid or allow a small (1mm) movement?

I checked it yesterday and it seemed rock solid, however I managed to get two "clunks" out of it, with very very small movement. But no more than two. I could not replicate it no matter how strong I tried.

I'll try to I can see it knocking while my girlfriend turns the steering wheel.
