mentioned this in my other post, but thought i would open a new so people see it 8)

whats the going rate for a tensioner puller replaced and fitted on the aux belt

garage rang me said £150 for job done :shock: a bit pissed off cos i only spent £270 2 months ago on 2 new belts. and now this

If it's the aux belt tensioner that's slap bang in the middle of the engine, it's a ballache of a job.

Hour (ish) to get the old unit out, 20 minutes of fiddling to swap the tensioner over another hour (ish) to get the new unit back in.

And that's if you know exactly what goes where.

I know it's a twat of a job as i did one on a 306 a few years ago. Our current 306 needs changing too, i've had the bearing for 3 months and keep putting it off!

Maybe put £100 towards one of the Halfords pro tool kits (the 150 piece kit is always on offer), £40 on the bearing (if not cheaper from ebay) and do the job yourself?

No such thing as "not knowing how to do it", just "not tried yet". Put things back in the place and order they came out. Simples :D

ye thats what garage said, its a ball ake of a job,

they said its £70 for the tensioner and rest is labour, im a little annoyed tho to be honest if they would have told me about it when i had the cambelt done i would have had it changed then save on labour cost

Picked mine up for around £15 (got lucky on a relisting)

Might be £70 if they change the tensioner AND spring. If they're doing both then it's not a bad price. (not that i've eve heard of a spring failing!)

Although the work is in the same place, you can do the cam belt without touching any of the aux belt bits and vice versa.

thats ebay price need the part asap (now)

just rang andrew page and general traffic

both said £65 for tensioner

Unfortunately that's why workshops charge premium rate for parts, because they can get it sent to them in a couple of hours.

It's a weakspot of the engine design, of the 8 xud engined cars we've had over the years, i've had to change the aux belt on 5 of them and i'm about to do my 2nd tensioner.

ye as long as job gets done im sure it will be worth it,

if that belt jumps off it will cause more than 150 worth of damage im sure

anyway im just off posting your bulbs, 1 mile walk to post iffice from my house :D

Not a clue, but i know they get noisy as hell when they start to fail, and the belt starts to wander off the outer edge. I'm getting really quick at changing the belts now :D

mine wasnt noisey, but belt was definately wondering off it i could see that myself .

It's not just the bearings in the pully that go but the needle bearings in the ally housing part as well, it's these that make the belt run off to one side as the hole thing runs out of true.

My V6 aux belt tensioner cost about £150 :shock: If I'd have put a replacement spring on it I'd have had to pay an extra £100.

That's just the parts cost!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
