That kinda struck a chord, my dad did a few trips as a gunner in a Lancaster, till they decided qualified engineers weren't completely expendable.
(So they sent him somewhere safe, called Burma).
In this?

I've not had a proper chat with me dad yet but I just needed to ask him something, so I told him we'd have to do a Skype soon to look at the pics and so he could show me where about he used to put his chocky bar. He said he was thinking about the turret just the other day, he well remembers sitting in there but he can't imagine how he used to get in and out of it wearing a parachute, climbing through a tiny slot with a sliding door. It must have been even worse when there were guns in there too (he did his national service just after the war). He also said the idea was, if push came to shove and the gunner needed to bail out, he could rotate the turret 180 degrees and go out backwards, although how bad things would have to be before you'd want to do that he didn't know. We then had a laugh about the pilot saying he hadn't told him to bail out - where's he going? Ah well, never liked that bloke anyway...

I've heard similar stories, including tail gunners hanging their 'chute on someting inside the fuselage, near the sliding door to the turret.
Kind of unfortunate if you forget to pop back inside and calmly slip it on first.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

It might be exciting if the last thing you saw as you exited the 'plane was your 'chute hanging on a hook in the tail plane...

You: "Can I just pop back for my..?"
Gravity: "No chance matey boy, you're mine - going down! "
