D8 Exec Turbo Estate - MOT Failure

Post by mjb »

I love this car so much (sad but true, it's served me well), but I just can't afford to repair it :(

Good bits:
Brand new upper engine mount
Bodywork's ok, but it's been in the wars so quite a few small dents/scratches but no rust.
Engine's nice and the turbo has no problem putting a smile on your face when it kicks in.
No problems with the gearbox.
Done around 175,000 with no problems. 70+ of that since I bought it about 26 months ago mostly motorway miles.
Electrics all work bar the heated seats. Retro-fitted trip computer.
Keypad immobiliser. Last time I used the keypad ti worked perfectly, but I usually just use the key.
Climate control works, aircon blows nice and cold in the middle of summer, even if the car's been left in the sun for the day
Recent brake pad/disc replacement.
Exec alloys - good condition including a spare! Tyre tread ok.
Cream leather electric seats (estate). Worn but still nice.
Hydraulics are all good (though I may nick the clutch for my dad's)
Foglamps
Recent change of all filters (been done *very* regularly)
Can throw in the original stereo and cd changer

Bad bits:
Needs a new bonnet and hinges for MOT
Needs a new n/s CV boot and track rod end for MOT
The centre rear seat has no seatbelt (but it's still an MOT pass!)
Idles a bit dodgy. Suspect it's one of the injectors a bit clogged.
One radiator fan is dead, presume it's the fan itself
Radiator needs replacing, or just make sure you put some radweld in whenever you flush the system.
The connector holding the one of the tailgate light clusters on was rusted last time I had to change a bulb. I've cleaned it out and freshened up the seal, but it may need another clean next time a bulb goes. Luckily you could take the cluster out and it'd still pass MOT.

Would be an ideal car to break, you'll make plenty of money off it if you've got somewhere to keep it and a bit of time to list stuff on ebay. Or you could have it back on the road for about £300 but be aware it is overdue a cambelt change which'll cost.

£offers?

That's a real shame m

Unfortunately as time moves swiftly on then the early D8's (12/13 years old) are going to start dropping off now (this must be the 3rd or 4th on here in so many months).

Lets hope you stay with another 406 though for your next car!

Welly.

If I had the cash I would repair it and get the cambelt done, it's just been such a great car.

Spending £600 to fix a car that cost me £1000 seems daft, but it really has been that solidly reliable it'd be money well spent. I just don't have the money though.

If you've done 70,000 miles for £1,000.00 you've already benefited more than every other car driver out there.

I've lost £2,000.00 in value over 16,000 miles (plus £1,000.00 in repairs)

Yeah scary that isn't it. If I were to sell mine now I'd have lost somewhere in the region of £2K a year in depreciation, and SWMBO is nagging me to piss even more money away by replacing it with another "nearly new" car. She's using lines like "it's at the age where things are going to start going wrong"..... and "gonna cost more and more to keep it running" etc :frown: I really must fix it and fall back in love with it soon, I'm so tempted to get rid! :(

Buy mine, spend a couple hundred fixing it up and prove her wrong!

Fast car, very reliable, up to 50mpg on the motorways... you know it makes sense ;)

It's got a brand new engine mount. The whole lot got replaced a month or 2 back. That's £160 worth right there, and 3/4 of a tank of BP!

C'mon someone make me an offer on the whole thing! Doesn't have to be a huge amount, I just don't want to see it in the scapper.
