2001 406 HDi 110 estate

Post by jameslxdt »

right, i just cant bring myself to trust this car, so it has to go, where do i start
its a Y reg 2001 406 HDi GLX family estate, being the family version it has 7 seats, its china blue, the bodywork isnt perfect, but not too bad, i have replaced the interior for the D9 sri interior, which is the half leather style, the car has done 167,000 miles, and has full service history, as you may know i have just replaced the clutch and flywheel, and all the hydraulics, i also done the headgasket, cambelt and waterpump when i first bought the car, it now runs perfectley and uses no water or oil, for the last 1500 miles ive used it anyway, the only fault with it at the moment is the CD player which works when it feels like it, as a result i have fitted a 5 disc cd changer which works perfectley, i also replaced all the bulbs inside and out of the car, it has MOT till NOV 08 and tax till JAN 09
well what more can i say, oh yeah
i would like £2,500 but i am open to offers
as for part exchange, i am after a D8 V6 manual Exec. Estate 8)

you know, it may be fine for the next 100k or so, but D9's arent exactly perfect, and i really cant afford it to mess up on me so id rather spend that money on petrol for a V6

Anyway, you might have a wait to get want for it, it's still bluddy winter...

If you want reliability, get yourself a D8 tubby!

Has anyone else noticed how an awful lot of D8 owners on here have tubbies despite the fact they were comparatively rare cars? 8)

Interesting, it's probably because they are unusual, more for the enthusiast than an a to b set of wheels.

Nah I'll bet most people don't know how rare they were until they've bought one and tried to find a Haynes for it - like me! It's just there's a lot of 'em on ebay for a low price because the present owner thinks that over 100k is knocking on a bit for a fast car ;)

I really should update my sig shouldn't I. Can't remember where I put the 170k picture tho

Now that's not fair, I came to say hello to begin with :P

You're right though, I bought my tubby for £500 off ebay, had the usual suspension problems, no handbrake or rear brake all of which I've fixed; and a sh1t fit exhaust which was about 2 inches off the deck and liked clouting speed bumps  (now fixed, clever blokey at merityre welded an extra bracket on to hoist it up); And the oil leak. And the coolant leak. Other than that a mighty fine car!

bought mine for a grand off ebay 2 years ago, put just under 70,000 more miles in it and all i've needed is:

exhaust
exhaust (cos kwik-sh*t messed up)
exhaust (cos thisas-sh*t messed up)
exhaust (cos sh*t-fit messed up)
exhaust (cos the useless bastards messed up yet again)
exhaust (this is getting tiring)
engine mount

and the usual service stuff:

rear brakes
new windscreen
1001 bulbs

It's done me good apart from the rear centre seatbelt needing to be cut :D

The £180 tubby I bought for my dad ain't so good. Needs replacement clutch hydraulics (unless i can figure out how to bleed it) and some figuring out of why the turbo ain't spooling up.

Take a look in the green haynes - D9 - page 6.4 covers the sealed system. Looks like a case of not being able to bleed it. However removal does not seem too bad. You could remove it, fill it, bleed it refit
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

I don't need to look at the D9 haynes when the D8 one covers it too. There's 3 problems though:
1) I have no idea how to get anywhere near the master cylinder
2) The master cylinder needs a special tool
3) I'm starting to doubt a bleeding would do the job. There's got to be a leak somewhere for it to have air in it in the first place

1) its very fookin hard to get at
2) all you need is some patience, remove the rubber jacket, attached with 6 10mm nuts, rip it out, its a bugger, remove the clip for the output pipe and pull the pipe clear, then cut the clips off for the supply hose, and pull it off, then get underneath and squeeze your arm up the back the engine and twist the cylinder clockwise and it comes loose, go back up the top and wiggle it arround, it may come out, if not hit it with a screwdriver and hammer, then get back underneath and jiggle it out, yes there aint much room, try this on a HDi
as for reffiting, wiggle it in and from underneath turn it anti clockwise till it stops and refit the pipes
job done
