Anyone breaking a 99 406?

Post by D9406 »

As per title, looking for a low pressure steering pipe, seems that these parts dont exist any more, dont really want to scrap car off but looking likely for want of a small pipe.

This has been discussed quite a bit now over the last few years on here & the Coupe club forum
Go to your local Pirtek with your old one & they'll make you up a replacement better than oe.

Not so sure about that, it's not the hose that's gone, it's the metal pipe. The heat shield sawed through the pipe and I don't have the whole of the pipe anymore, it dropped off somewhere.
Can pirtek form the nipple that is screwed into the steering box? Also as stated I don't have the whole part as a pattern so they won't know the shape or length.

I have a scrap 2001 Hdi but I expect the pipe is the same but you will have to take it off. I live in Dorset.

Well, it doesn't have to be a metal pipe joined to a flexible, the whole lot can be flexible.
Yes Pirtek can form any hydraulic fittings, all you would need to do is work out the length for them.
But hopefully Peter can help you out.

OK, so two of my lads went down to Peter's yesterday and retrieved the low pressure return steering pipe, Peugeot fitted 2 types, mine has a nut fitting and I now have 2 return pipes from 2 406's both of which are a clamp down fitting.
Looking at a service box diagram the clamp down type is the one shown so mine must be something peugeot fitted because it was what was at hand that day. The fitting is identical to the 206 and 306 pipes, neither of which will fit in the avaiable space.
Option now is to see if the rack end of the pipe can be cut off and replaced by a fitting which will screw into my rack. I'll email Pirtek tomorrow with photos and see if they can help.
Funnily enough I have just seen a 406 for sale in NI which says that it only needs a steering pipe.
