406hdi 110 2003 Rapier

Post by charliedog »

Please if anyone can help me it would be really appreciated.

I am at the end of my tether with the diagnosis of a fuel problem

The car decided to stop without any warning with "Anti Pollution Fault" displayed on the MFD. After removing the key and waiting 10 seconds the car restarted but only ran for a short time before cutting out. This happened time and time again. I ran it very slowly but when I put my foot down the car stopped.

A diagnostic check revealed the following:

P0230 - Low pressure pump short cct - open or short cct to earth

P1112 - High pressure diesel Monitoring lack of pressure (leak)

I have removed the HP fuel regulating valve which looked ok and replaced the 2 x small o rings. The bottom ring split when I tried to fit it.

I have been on ebay looking for a repair kit and possible replacement valves but they are expensive

If anyone has any advice or can help in any way I would be grateful. I live in Waterlooville in Hampshire and trying to find a diesel doctor who may be able to help but no luck so far

Sounds like your lift pump to me, but I'm no mechanic....
The lift pump is in your fuel tank, accessed via a hole under the rear seats. This pump ( sometimes called in-tank pump ) supplies the main HP fuel pump in the engine bay - these pumps work in unison, if either goes wrong then you have a non start issue.
First thing to check would be the wiring on and connected to the lift pump, as Diagnostic's shows a wiring issue...

To help you determine if this pump works or not you should hear this pump run for about 5 seconds when you put the ignition on, and also a whooshing noise in the engine bay as the fuel pressure is built up in the fuel filter bowl.

I would concur. The pressure regulator on the back of the HP pump can give problems, they are quite easy to fit and not to expensive on ebay, if the in tank pump is OK that's probably the next thing to go for. The fuel filter is another one to go for if it hasn't been changed lately.

Thank you for your helpful comments

I removed the Fuel Filter and examined the fuel housing. No signs of contamination.

Removed the HP Regulating Control Valve and removed 2 small rubber washers and gasket. Cleaned with brake cleaner and replaced the small washers. On purchasing from Peugeot Stealers, was told their are 3 rubber seals/washers - 2 small and one larger? sure I only saw the 2 small ones on removal.

On replacing Control valve found difficulty in locating it on the pump, not sure how much force is required to push the valve home it seemed the 2 small rubber seals/washers were resisting the valve from seating properly.

Sorry this is so long and drawn out:(

Anyone know of a knowledgeable 406 mechanic who lives near to waterlooville , Portsmouth.

Thank you

The seals need to be lubricated but there is usually enough diesel floating about to wet them sufficiently, the regulator does need a bit of a push but with wet seals it should go in OK.

Hi PeterN,

Thanks for the info I will wet the seals with Diesel fuel before I connect up. Do you know if there are supposed to be 2 or 3 seals?? I know where the 2 small ones go but is there another larger seal closer to the gasket end.?? (not sure if seals is the correct terminology.)

Yes.
The seals are - 1 small black one, 1 small green one , 1 larger black one ( like a tap washer size ) and then the metal gasket.
I can't remember in which order the small ones go in, sorry...

PeterN & Gingermagic,

Thanks, its the bigger one that baffles me, even Stealers don't know how or where it goes :(

I am also at a loss as to what the torque settings are for the 2 bolts that fix the regulator to the Pump body :?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Peuge ... Swa~BYbioH. Look at all the pictures.

Looks as though the large 'O' ring goes in the groove at the front of the body.

I wouldn't worry about the torque, just do them up until the feel right bearing in mind the size of the screws, they don't have to be that tight. I never use a torque wrench except for cylinder head bolts.
