A new clutch m/cylinder (which it must be as CJ's replaced everything else) will set you back 40 quid from Pug. 32 from GSF...

I have the master cylinder in the garage that you can have with the car but it never bothered me enough to replace it. Was told it was simply a pedal spring...

I am going to have a look at this spring today, since I realise that the mention of any clutch problem results in screaming and running away.

A gander on ServiceBox reveals that there's a "declutching assistance spring" - it's this I reckon that's gone weak and isn't holding the pedal up. It would also explain why the clutch is so much lighter than on any other car I've driven (including the 407).

Pretty sure all 406s (if not all cars) have that spring. You know how you put pressure on the pedal and it gets harder until about half way, then gets easier towards the floor? That's the spring. If you uncouple the master cylinder ball joint from the pedal, you can feel how the spring forces the pedal to either up or down but won't let it stay in the middle
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Had a squint today and can see the spring but it looks like a complete git to get to. Sod it... the new owner will just have to live with lifting the clutch pedal up now and again...

Here are some pictures from this morning. To be honest, I will have trouble letting go of the car for anything less than £800... unless I am really desperate. You will get £100 worth of diesel as well - good for at least 650 miles... more if you have a lighter foot than I do!

Well, it was sold pending the sale of the buyer's car but the buyer's buyer pulled out... Holing on until the end of the week and then it's eBay time.
