WANTED: Saloon/Estate HDI

Post by akira »

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of selling my petrol vehicle in hope of replacing with a decent Diesel. I narrowed my shortlist down to the usual suspects: Mondeo TDCI, Octavia, 406 HDI. The lack of four door isn't really a problem, my main criteria was a car that was pretty reliable and good for long distances despite being up to 10 yrs old. Also needs to be comfy for the long drives so all the usual mod cons.

Sure you guys would correct me if I was wrong but a 406 fills this criteria right? I mean the HDI is reliable? Just the 406 coup tilts it over any of my other options on the looks :)

Many thanks

Hi there, I think you're better off asking over on the coupé club - http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/ Here's one straight away from their For Sale section - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/2581816.htm

Also, look for stuff about removing the particulate filter, you'll be glad you did

I wouldnttouch a mondeo tdci with a barge pole! I had a 03 plate 130 with 40k and it had endless probs inc a fuel injection problem that min cost would have been £30 for a cam sensor but i think it was injectors at £300 eachplus coding!!! Horrible horrible thing! Stick with a HDI of some sort i say!!

Steve's right - you need to know what you're getting into with a 2.2 HDi, (which is the only diesel version of a coupe). You need to be prepared to ditch the particle filter, but the good news is it can be done very cheaply and you can get it remapped to 180 bhp while you're at it. 8)

To summarise:

406 2.2 HDi (saloon estate or coupe) - ditch particle filter, keep car, enjoy.
Octavia - learn humility while being blown into the weeds by 406's
Mondeo, (pre 2004) - as above.
Mondeo, (2004 on) - keep particle filter, ditch car.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Change of mind, I'm looking for a saloon/estate now. I'd prefer the practicality :)

The Coupe is almost as practical as the saloon - seriously, the boot is huge, and the rear bench seats and rear passenger footwells can hold a lot of stuff. You'd be amazed how much you can fit into it.

No contest with the Estate, though - they're slightly more capacious :cheesy:
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.
