New car??

Post by Captain Jack »

Hola chaps, a very long time no speakie. Mostly because I am boring and I have nothing to talk about!

Straight to the point - I am looking for a potential replacement for the 407 that I've had for the past 8+ years. It's a bit creaky and things are starting to go wrong on it that I cannot justify spending money on, like air con and lacquer peeling off...

I'd like something similar to what I am used to - a nice roomy, comfortable saloon. I've been looking around but it's a bit of a mine field, considering I've not been keeping up to date with carz and there's too much noise around whatever-tek/EV/eco malarkey that I have no interest in.

I am looking from 64 reg onwards simply because I have a vanity plate that won't go on older cars.

I've whittled my selection down to the following on my 10k budget:

Ford Mondeo Tit 2.0 diesel. Seems like a nice package...
BMW 3 series 320d - my wife already has an X3, which is mostly the same, to lug our brood around and it seems decent, though nothing exciting (and I hate the 'sterio' on it)

Er.... that's kind of it. I don't know what else there is out there that's similar. Are DS4s any good or will they have rattled themselves to pieces by now? Vulvas... meh - the console looks like it's from the 90s.Vauxhall - not quite ready to die yet.

Ideally I'd like a Pug 3008 (or the new 508) but they are hella expensive.

Thoughts/ideas?

Greetings Cap'n

I've already defected to the BMW faction, ('bout time we had a BMW Corner to drift round)....
Mine's far too old for your plate, but it's the end of an era - last normally aspirated straight 6, last non-electric steering rack etc. I love it.
320d's a decent car, 330d would keep the stupid grin firmly in place.
Not a fan of the Mondeo or any of the newer Pugs, but then I'm a luddite who still refuses to accept that FWD, slushmatics or any form of crossover/mpv can ever be tolerable.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Whenever I see an MPV or a Picarsso-type cross-over type car (yes, you, BMW X1, X2 and Audi < Q5...), a piece of me dies inside. Slushmatics - the X3's manual box is really rather notchy - a lot more sensitive to jerks than on the Peugeot. I don't know if it's a characteristic of manuals on the Beemers or just on X3.

I've never tried dual-clutch thingies, though, and I hear they are good.

Hello there young man! Long time no squirrel. Are you surviving ok? Boring? Oh come on, you can't be that boring! All I post are cat pics...

Umm, I'm already looking for my next car but because of my back and the need for an upright seating position, plus all the short journeys I do means a petrol, the choice is bleak here, it's all bloody diesels, highbreads and laughably overpriced Germania

EV's, well, you got your hybrids which are just like diesels in that they won't last long with lots of small journeys, otherwise the batteries are permanently flat and just extra weight to drag around until they die. Plug-ins make a little more sense, if you can afford to sell both kidneys. Straight lectric, I could run one at the moment I do so few miles but then there's having to strap the dog to the roof rack if it needs to go to the vet...

Sooo.... Frod Mundano, I guess they've got away from 100,000 miles -> bin these days but I wouldn't risk it. Bimmer, is that the stereotype or you just don't like the sound system? You already have 1 in the family so it's not like a step into the unknown  I think Doggy's experiences have put me off anything PSA for the foreseeable, I suspect it's designing stuff in house that's been their downfall. Plus I see Pugs still didn't get away from the hideous "Thomas the Tank Engine" styling phase either. Vauxhalls of recent years are meant to be pretty crap (and I'd suspect spares are going to get hard to find once the takeover dust settles). And since Ford couldn't make them profitable and got shot of them, Vulvas are now owned by, what was it? Oh yes, the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd of China, very reassuring

I guess that's another vote for the Bimmer  Of course it's not compulsory to drive them like a knob. Other than that, I hear Mercs have serious problems (going wrong expensively sort of problems), Scooby's are meant to be pretty good, also Hyundai/Kia if you can stick the bland styling and the need to wear a disguise in case someone sees you driving one. Steer clear of anything Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep/Suzuki. Mazdas are ok as far as I know, Toy otters too if you don't mind being blackmailed. f*cked if I'm recommending anything VAdGe after they threw their owners under the bus a few years back...

I love automatics, they're not the disaster waiting to happen that many think they are. DSG's are meant to be ok if you steer away from anything that runs in oil (or is it air? My brother did tell me the difference but I've forgotten) but I suspect the main problem is them not liking remaps. CVT's are meant to be noisy? No idea what that's about, maybe people don't like the way the engine stays at one speed while the car accelerates.

Well, that's my biassed opinion, probably quite useless to you really. You should do what I can't do here and that's spend a few hours at a used car supermarket trying cars for size. If you're allowed to do that any more...

Hey Captain, how's you?

Sadly I can't help you to decide on a new car, in my eyes cars all look/sound/drive the same nowadays - it's just manufacturers ticking boxes ....

The wife's Cistern is awful, it's noisy, bumpy and full of unnecessary gadgets ( you have to scroll through a menu to adjust the blower speed - wcpgw? )

I've had a chat with some car enthusiast mates and the general consensus is that the Beemer is a decent car, the new Mondeo is also better now than previous models.

As a curve ball, I've been told the High n Dry i30 is very good, a good all-rounder, possibly a tad underpowered but at 80mpg...

Thanks chaps. So it's either Mondy or the 3 series.

Mazda of the age I can afford suffers from DPF issues on their diesel engines and petrols are asthmatic.

Speaking of petrols.... What are they like on the Beemers? Are they turbo charged or n/a? I always found them utterly underwhelming in n/a form. But.... I will do more short ish distance driving that long, so maybe?! TFSI stuff from vagina group is turbos, right?

Koreans... No. I am not a badge snob but no. I've been in a few and they feel cheaper than Pugs.

Will have a looksie. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in my taxi, holler.

Don't think you'd find mine underwhelming, n/a but 3.0, 270 bhp and amazingly torquey, bit like a quick diesel that morphs into a howling banshee if you let rip. Know what you mean though, remember trying an E36 318is back in the late 90's - it was gutless, then tried a 325i of that period which was also disappointing, settled for a Nissan 200 SX instead.

All the newer petrol BMWs are turbos, e.g. a later 330i is a 2.0 turbo, current G20 series are all 4-cyl turbos apart from the M340i and Alpina B3
Previous F30 series were also all 4-cyl turbo apart from 335i/340i/M3 all of which are turbo 6's

I have still got the 406 but bought a 2011 Mondeo 2.2 diesel titanium sport a few years back,i was a bit sceptical at first but couldn't afford the Audi,Bmw equivalent at the time,i have been pleasantly surprised over the 25k+ miles i've done in it,no issues at all bar regular servicing,i had a remap done last year so now 235bhp/365 lb/ft torque and it and it flies when it needs to,wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Mondeo.

Prices are just insane. I could sell my X3 for more than I paid for it. Also, most diseasels seem to be rather paltry looking 1.6L and I am sure the cars aren't any lighter... I can't imagine these being very reliable and I am still haunted by the PSA 1.6 HDI stories...

Anyway, found a decent looking Mondy with a 2.0L engine. Only 148bhp but should be more than enough for my needs. Going to see it OK Thursday and potentially collect. Got offered 600 squids for the Pug, which is less than what I could get privately but it's far too much hassle.

Steer clear of the "powershift" gearbox models as they seem to be very troublesome gearboxes.

Just a plain 6 speed manual here. I generally steer clear of slushmatics due to me destroying one on my mum's old Clio.

The deed in done - now the owner of Ford Mondeo. It's really a lovely car to drive - very tight and feels well put together. The 407 felt like a bag of spanners in comparison.

It's a 150bhp 2.0 model but a quick run with Forscan gets it up to 180bhp without any remap services. The only difference between the two, hardware wise, is the presence of a larger intercooler on the 180bhp version. A bit like the D9 90/110 models - though they didn't bother with the intercooler at all there!

Image

Plenty of plans for it. Upgrade infotainment to the latest version for Car Play stuff + amp + subwoofer. No leather seats either and not sure if I'll want to change that as the cloth ones are really comfy!

Has anyone had any experiences with *custom* made seat covers? They look quite decent in photos/videos and, if nothing else, protect the original material.

Citroen C5 or Skoda Superb. Both roomy and with a good ride and very economical (Diesels).

I don't mind a Mondy at all. So that means well done Cap'n on your purchase as far as I can tell those there Fords are a snazzy drive and capable.

This years experience has told me that you can't really buy a "bad" car anymore, I think anything sort of 2014+ is pretty much a safe bet whatever manufacturer you choose, after all the all use the same supply chains and the components are very high quality now - *runs and hides*

Biggest obstacle is PRICE now, cars are fiercely expensive especially right now.
