I can haz a new car too

Post by Doggy »

I thought it was time for a discreet gentleman's conveyance suitable for the more mature motorist, but I bought this instead.

Appears I've joined the petrol club and so will be single-handedly revitalising the UK economy.

Initial impressions:
Very pointy, (but then most things probably seem that way after the Citroen).
Seems really low-geared after the diesels (about 2300 RPM at 70 in 6th) - keep looking for 7th.
Nice place to sit, comfy on a run.
It's tiny
But sounds eargasmically gorgeous - the last iteration of the N/A straight 6 Munich warp drive. (You millennials can keep your turbos)!

Must be my post mid-life crisis.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Err, it's a bimmer. Is it black? :supafrisk: It'd be expensive, poorly serviced and thrashed here... Yep, about 14 grand.

Thank you kindly sir!

I'd probably have preferred a 5 series, but I lug mine around on a trailer behind the motorhome so didn't want something bigger/heavier.

Which forum's best for info on these?

But but but... they all look the same and they're all black

I'm talking here in Croatia where these sort of cars are a huge status symbol. The first owner is probably a company so servicing is probably fine (although driving maybe isn't) but the next owner has probably overreached themselves for the badge and then finds out how much feeding and maintaining the thing costs and either cheaps out or forgets (worse still for MB).

Admittedly if I went German I'd probably go for a BWM, MB quality and reliability seems to have gone down the pan (unless you buy one made for the home market apparently) and VW are a bunch of soulless futhermuckers, but with my back I'd have to go for a X class ($$$) and I'd be looking for evidence of servicing. I've also sat in a Bini and the seating position was fine, but I couldn't imagine looking at that horrible cheap dash for any amount of time and not hating the thing.

I'm not knocking Eric's purchase, it looks really clean, it's probably plenty powerful and ticks the right boxes and I hope it does better than the lemon, may it serve you well sir. Btw did you fix the indicators yet? :P

Meh, needs the jobbie on the end of the stalk replacing (I'm sure I saw a guide somewhere). Failing that a big rubber band.

In Croatia failure to indicate is endemic I'm afraid. As is the "beautiful blue light" and the ability to stay on their own side of the road
To generalise:
BMW - crazy bastard doing 3 times the speed limit on the wrong side of the road overtaking as many cars as possible. Will often end up crashing into another BMW (ask my bike mechanic).
MB - Unpredictable, impatient, occasionally crazy. I mean, overtaking on a blind bend or cutting up a sodding great lorry crazy.
Audi - usually the car 6' behind you (the Hoops Of Doom in your rear view), if at night with overpowered/misaligned headlamps lighting up the inside of your car. Expects you to go faster, will not overtake unless there's a gap that you could navigate a ship in.
VW - Drunk.
Seat/Škoda - ditto on a tighter budget.
