2014 508 2.2HDi GT Auto - what kind of auto?

Post by Welly »

Hello my forum friends.

A friend* of mine might* be checking out potential new motor carriages for his family main car again.

He happened upon an advert for a rather lovely 508 2.2 GT with a slushy g/box.

My question is - what type of auto box would it be? hoping not the 'EGS' electro/mechanical box that he may* already have experience with. A torque converter box will be a pleasant thing.

If it is a traditional auto are they a box of tiny expensive things to keep you awake at night or will a timely fluid change save the day?

Also is it right for him to see the words "heated massaging seats" and go all feminine over it.

I hankered after a 508 for a while, but was disappointed to find you couldn't get a 2.2 manual or an estate with posh trim so lost interest.
Don't have a clue what auto box they have, sorry
If I ever get an auto, I'll be looking for something with one of the 8 or 9 speed ZF jobs which seem OK to me.

I hope your 'friend' finds a suitable gentleman's carriage though I am a little surpised he's considering a diesel. :?

Why do I feel the need to fart? :supafrisk: I dunno, more to go wrong? Heated seats, ok if they're leather, but massaging? Wot? I've no experience, does it vibrate so you end up like a jelly spread over the seat?

 Forgot to mention:

I haz levver heated seats wiv the massage feature, I think only on the drivers side.

Used it? Once, has a weird sensation like pebbles moving randomly in one's lumbar region. Pointless.

Wiggy - thanks for the technical data, gives me a point of research [read: discover ticking time bomb gearbox most likely]

Doggy - yes I kinda thought the massage seats would be a one-time only waste of effort.

Also "surprised at looking at dizzlers" - yes but then the choice of carriage for our needs is terrible, I mean really bad.

What our main car does:

4 x times a week: A very brief run around the corner to t'wifes work (she has to transport much stuff) distance 0.2 miles.
Other week days and weekends: Running about locally shopping probs 50 miles a week.
6 to 8 times a year: Long motorway runs to very North or very South or very East with a car full of people so need space and comfort.

Other 'need's:

Must be Auto.
Ideally Pez Turbo.
Not keen of a dizzler with weird emissions controls.
Ideally elevated driving position but not essential.
Missus recently saying a 'Saloon' car might be nice, kinda stylish - that's why I checked out a 508, we* don't tend to follow the 'norm' with cars.

With those sort of journeys you'd kill a modern diesel. Petrol, exploding tiny engine with a turbot, umm, how about a Scooby Doo? CVT's sound a bit risky but they've been punting them out for years, can't be as bad as a Jatco, Shirley?

I am a fan of the Legacy as it goes, I think the MPG's are a bit lacking and the Road Tax high, but supposed to be a good steer.

I even looked at a .........no wait........I can't even sayyyyy........a ........... Le...........xus IS300h hybrid  they've become affordable* but although they are whisper-quiet and a quality ride the batteries DO NOT like short journeys

No hybrid likes short journeys, sis-in-law has one (some sort of small Lexus), most of the time it's a shopping trolley and the consumption is horrendous, it's probably killing the batteries too. In my brief foray into the hybrid world one bit of advice I saw was if you live at the top of a hill then go for it, but if you live at the bottom forget it. A plug-in might be better but for some bizarre reason the premium over a "normal" hybrid is preposterous.

Steve I have a hatred of slushmatics for a reason & the 535d is only available with
a poxy slushmatic & guess what it probably needs a full rebuild at £2.5k + vat.

Doggy it's a zf6hp26 (6speed) the eight speed is supposed to be much better BUT
They all have a lot of part's that wear out eventually, so beware the high millage slushmatic

Unless you don't mind the bill, mine would/will be like new after a rebuild
I am just currently waying up the economics

I love the Scooby doo legacy but it a bit Oliver Reed in my favourite engine choice
2002 110 HDi estate, Rapier in monaco blue! ( found quite a bit more power :cheesy: ) SOLD I've sorted the airbag light :cheesy:
1998 3.0 V6 SE coupe in Diablo Red ( my baby ) sold
2006 206 1.4 16v sport in Aegean blue ( wife's shopping trolley  )

2006 BMW e61 535d m-sport :supafrisk: run's for cover
