406's.........the future is bleak!!

Post by bigknickers »

I've loved 406 HDI's for the last 10+ years, but they are getting thin on the ground. So, where do we go in a couple of years time when we want a long lasting trouble free car for a princely sum of about £1500?.............is it a Citreon C5 estate? a Hyundai estate? a Dacia estate?

Toyota Avensis..... post 2002/3... ? Apparently , when they were designing the suspension,
Toyota took the handling of the 406 as a reference point.

I've not owned an Avensis, however, so don't know how successful they were, in that respect.

I mention the handling, because it's very much part of what I really liked about my 406. My current car,
Golf MK4, in comparison, doesn't turn in to corners particularly well, always feels somewhat reluctant,
and doesn't really encourage enthusiastic driving. A trait of that model I think, not just my car.

May as well hang up your driving gloves and call it a day  I know Toyoyo's are very proficient at being 'cars' but they lack soul and character that the 406 just....has.

I'm not sure the 406's handling was that good really, the 405 I had was super-sharp but then the 406 seemed to go all squishy, think it was set up for mile munching which it did very well.

A Citroen C5 is an often overlooked but very good replacement for a 406 as our senior member Doggy has just began ownership of one.

As far as I can make out the 407, although handles very nicely, maybe suffers annoying quality issues with the interior and climate control system etc.

Never had a problem with mine, sure it's not as big as the 406 but its not meant to be. I just use a van if my cars not big enough

C5 and 407 are basically same car so both share same problems, its usually cheaper to buy parts from Citroen as there cheaper than Peugeot but all come in same boxes

After much navel gazing it was a 407 for me too. It'll be 6 years this October and I've put 120k on it and I still love it.

I've since briefly had a 508 and by comparisson the 407 is so strange that it would make more sense badged as a Citroen, and the build and materials on the 407 is embarrassing compared to the 508.

However, the 2.2 bi-turbo is amazing, and I'm happy with crazy Frenchness.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I'm 12 years with 407's now. Seems everyone believes the honest john type reviews rather than genuine owners. Which suits me as it keeps our cars to enthusiasts. RWB As we know well lots of these are very very reliable cars but like everything mechanical need looking after. Not everyone 'gets' the quirkiness of the shape but I'd much rather stand out in my 407 than blend in with a Vauxhall Insipid !!

If you think of your car as being an appliance like your washing machine that you turn on when you want to use it, and if you belive in dealer stamps, then I can see you you might be surprised and disppointed when something breaks.

The sort of people that would join a forum like this aren't like that.

The reason I joined this forum was to find out what to expect and wherever possible prevent it.
In the 15 years since I bought my first 406 I've never been left stranded, so I'd say that worked -- despite my incompetence with spanners.

Come to think of it, there wer a couple of close shaves, and they were all my own fault.

Yea I joined this forum for the same reason, moving on to a 407 owners forum when I killed my 406 and although I'm still a member here and another Peugeot forum they're not as busy as they used to be which is why I set up the facebook page for 407's which as you know is very busy with over 1200 members, the 406oc facebook page is just as busy but with lots more members, over 10k last time I looked

If I still had a 406 estate, which I still believe is one of the best looking, whilst ticking pretty much every box for me - and I needed to replace it, I would choose another 406, until such time that they are so rare or the price goes sky high...
After that, I honestly wouldn't know where to look for a replacement - most new cars look all the same, I guess time will tell for which ones stand the test of time...

There are still quite a few about on ebay but some at silly prices, there are still some reasonably priced ones though but you may have to travel - but I usually do to get what I want.

I broke with convention recently and bought a C220 Cdi merc estate 2001. I paid 490 pounds for it for it with 11 months MOT, it needed a few jobs which I have sorted out and one I haven't, it goes into limp home mode above 2000 rpm but it doesn't matter because it has a 6 speed manual box and as much torque as you need, it will do 70 mph at 2000 rpm in 6th and you can stay in 6th 95% of the time on the motorway, it pulls like a train.

As you probably know I drive very gently and don't need to exceed 2000 rpm. We have just come back from the far North of Scotland and averaged over 70 mpg, 10 mpg better than the 406, amazing. I will post some display pics later.

Shortly after I bought the Merc I was offered a nice 406 estate at a price I couldn't refuse so my wife is using that but in many ways I prefer it to the Merc.

I still have my Exec Estate although to be honest i hardly ever use it now and it is sat in next doors garage,i can't bear to part with it as it's probably not worth much at 163k miles but it starts.stops as it should and i've changed most things that need changing but realisticaly it's worth peanuts,it's towed our caravan all over the UK,carted stuff to the dump, transported me up and down to Derbyshire for years and has never put a foot wrong.

There are are still people looking for them - at sensible prices. Put it on ebay with a reserve or 'make offer' price, I'm sure someone will want it. Have a look on there and see what they are selling for.
