406 heater

Hi,ran low on coolant yesterday its a leak at the water pump small but been there for some time.Filled her up and bled at both points but there is now only cold air from the heater.I took the pipes off at the heater matrix and flushed with a hose, brown water did come out but then ran clear.Still cold air from blower,any ideas?

It is sometimes difficult to get all the air out of the heater, if you disconnect both pipes and pour water into the filler until it runs from both of them, refit the bottom one and fill until the water comes out of the top heater pipe and the top hose, then refit them, that should do it.

Hi Peter,thanks for taking the time to reply.The two pipes I diconnected were beside each other on my car could you explain it a bit more which is the top pipe and so on?

Ah, yes. On most cars they seem to be one above the other. Do the pipes get hot even when there is no heat from the heater? If not it probably is air if they are it could be an airflow flap problem in the heater. Seeing the pipes are side by side it probably wont make much difference which one you disconnect providing you are getting water from the pipe and the hose you have removed.

Undo the black bleed screw and fit a plastic bottle cut in half into the filler tank...fill the plastic bottle and let water run out of the bleed screw for a couple of minutes until it flows freely...it helps to have the radiator higher than the heater, ie, pointing uphill....run the engine with the bleed screw tightened with the plastic bottle full....at regular intervals open the bleed screw until water pours out in free flow.
When the water is flowing out of the heater bleed screw wait until the thermostat is open then open the other bleed screw and wait until water flows freely out of here.

This should solve any problem with air in the system, but you know you should get that water pump fixed!
