New 'stricter' MOTs...

Post by chazchuzzlewitt »

My gf's 406 hdi 2.2 is due it's mot next month, it has a couple of faults throwing the EML and the standard 'anti pollution ' fault in the display, (reading the codes I know at least 1 glow plug is out) plus the ESP light comes on at around 40mph. It had a blocked DPF earlier in the year which I removed and jet-washer back-flushed, and at the same time I removed the EGR and it's piping to stop any more crud being dumped in the intake. *touch wood* it has run fine since then.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has taken their slightly-modded Diesel through the 'new style' MOT and had issues? I've got a fairly relaxed MOT tester and as the glow plugs look like a right pain to access/replace my plan was just to clear the codes/EML on the morning of the test as iirc it doesn't come on again for 3 starts. I read they're supposed to check for EGR mods etc now, obviously I can put it back on but it'd be nice if I didn't have to!

Not had the 'pleasure' of trying the new-style MOT, but I'm not expecting any issues when it comes around.

Wouldn't worry about the glow plug issue, nearly all of them have a fault code logged for them and it'll start just fine at -15 without waiting for them to heat up anyway.

I don't think they can start removing engine covers/undertrays to have a good poke around? it's more to do with the physical testing?

As far as I understand it; if the car is fitted* with a DPF and it goes on to produce smoke on the test then it will fail? or something.

As far as I can make out among all the scaremongering and panic selling, is that the car must have a DPF if the car was manufactured after 2008 when the Euro5 rules can into play, although there are some exceptions.
Cars prior to this date only need a smoke test, which they can still fail if there is visable smoke.
Some cars built before 2008 have the sticker in the engine bay showing its smoke reading from new, which the car needs to meet - this sticker cannot be tampered with.

I don't think the MOT man can remove engine covers and undertrays ( unless the rules have changed) so the EGR blanks won't be seen if the pipework is in place, but the lack of pipework is a little more obvious..

I put my Golf in for a full pre-mot a few weeks ago. I've owned the car for 7 months, so although
I have all the records from the previous owner, the car and make are relatively new to me ( I owned
a Golf Mk2 GTI 16V almost 30 years ago )....

And I wanted to get an idea of just how deep the upcoming
costs were likely to be.

Garage flagged up...

Airbag light on ( Which I was , of course, aware of ).
Splits in rubber, both sides track rod ends. Fair enough.

and

Colour of brake fluid.

This one was new to me, and it seems to have come in with the new checks.
Fresh fluid is a light golden colour, more or less transparent. As the brake fluid
ages in use, becomes contaminated..., it darkens to brown.

Service records on the car show that her regular garage had, in 2015 , flagged up fresh fluid for
the next service in 2016. But no record of it ever having been done.

They have some sort of gadget for testing brake fluid here, there's a probe that gets stuffed into the reservoir and I always wonder what sort of crud it's been in before :frown: "No brake fluid? No problem! Pig's piss does the job just fine!"

They also have plates in the floor they park the wheels on that seem to do their best to rip the wheels off... Quite rigorous these MOT's seem to be, although the last one on the bike just seemed to be check the frame number, check the tyres sizes, take a picture, that's it, done. I suppose anyone can drive a car but a rider only has himself to blame.

There's not much to prevent someone extracting the discoloured fluid and replacing with nice clean fluid to pass the MOT? the reservoir would look great but the important fluid at the calipers would still be old

Not that BFC's cost much but I wouldn't put it past some people.

:arrowu: Now that's a capital idea! :supafrisk:

I was going to add there was no way of telling if the reservoir had been recently topped up due to massive leak, but then I realised the tester would probably notice that...

Had my MOT last week. Passed without an advisory despite the gutted DPF and a remap. Emissions reading was 0.61, which is about the sticker value of 0.51 but the original sticker has gone AWOL and they used a 3.00 as the limit :supafrisk:

Be wary of problems throwing up an eml, if it comes om during the mot it will fail. And for the more dodgy people out there taking the bulb out won't get you through as they check all the warning lights work as part of the test now.

The correct information on whether an EML is on and fails the test is that it only applies to diesel vehicles used after 1st July 2008 and for petrol vehicles used after 1st July 2003.

The brake fluid test is that a failure is for dirty brake fluid.

Regarding anything used for emission control like EGR valves etc only applies to visible components...anything the tester cannot see without removing parts is not required to be tested.

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/ ... ection_8.2

Read the testers manual.

As far as I'm aware eml on on any car is classed as a fail.
