406 niggles nearly all fixed

Post by soretoez »

Hi guys been a few weeks since I got my 406 estate and on the forum, Have been slowly working my way through all the little issues it came with put a new upper intercooler pipe on due to a big hole in the original pulls like a train now but still gutless lowdown, replaced the flap accuator it now moves and seems a touch keener but the car is still gutless :(
I repaired the the floppy indicator stalk well happy with that repair and my high beams work now :D

My pp2000 arrived today took a couple off goes to get it installed tried it on the car couldn't read anything turns out I may have been putting the wrong number in for the DAM; I need to look a bit further up the door label I was putting the 4 digit number at the bottom in will try again tomorrow.

I will try and get some photos up off the beast may be tomorrow if I can throw a bucket off water over it to get the dirt and the bird splat and feathers off the bumper.

Good work :cheesy:
Once PP2000 is up and running, you can check various things including the MAF sensor and injectors, which will help to diagnose potentially lack lustre performance..

yeah hopefully, it drives fine if I keep up the rev range a bit I thought it was just me having to get used to driving at diesel speed again. My last last car was a stripped out suzuki baleno 1.8 gsr 140 ish hp and weighed less than a ton so was stupidly quick.
The wife drove mine yesterday and even she say's theirs something not right I've been meaning to disconnect the maf for a few days now but kept forgetting.

It's just the daft small things with how it drives if I give it some welly from stand still it'll just bog down, can't do 30 in 4th, can't do 40 in 5th on the flat just the little things that you can do in other cars. fingers crossed pp2000 will find the issues. Then I can crack on with the really hard possibly impossible jobs like finding an estate passenger door in silver and a centre seatbelt as somehow the one in mine has torn at the bottom.

I've never been able to do 30 in 4th and 40 in 5th in any 406 diesel. In fact I find keeping the revs around 2000rpm was always best for fuel economy.

Just a thought....
Have you taken up the slack on the throttle cable?

I have two hdi estates, the one I am driving now is also gutless at below 1000 rpm but goes like a train over 2000 but the other one is OK at low revs, have swapped the MAF's over but makes no difference to either. I did find that the vacuum pump was weak and fitted the one from my scrapper, that improved it from 1500 - 2000 rpm but made no difference at the bottom end.

The only possible problem I can think of it the camshaft timing. I fitted a new belt last year and although I checked everything carefully the position of the adjustment on the cam drive sprocket is in a different place so I will check the timing when I get the motivation. I am also going to change the injectors because this one has never been as good on fuel as the first one I had which is now my spare parts dept, so I will fit the injectors from that and see if it makes any difference, although I have never had an injector fail in 10 years of running these.

Egr is the usual culprit. They're gutless on transition from overrun to pulling at low revs cos the mixture of fuel and recycled exhaust won't actually burn until you get some fresh air in there.
Both my 2.2's pull from about 25 in 4th, 40 in 5th (& about 55 in 6th with this one).

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I did this shortly before selling my Coupe, it made a hell of a difference. In fact, I should probably have had the throttle cable replaced with a brand new one; I suspect it would have made a bigger difference.
