I read this on MX5 forum earlier today...

"...... Next to car sat my condensing boiler, still churning out heat to keep the house warm, and just enough local heat to keep the garage above freezing.
I was mighty glad I had taken the precaution of drilling a small vent hole in my boiler condensate pipe just below the exit from the boiler.
It had already half-filled the drain bowl placed under it due to the outside pipe freezing solid, and had kept going.

I've already shown this trick to several neighbours, and they are all grateful for the tip-off. I've heard of no-end of people who have had this problem, and my plumber mate says he's fed up of having to either thaw out condensate pipes, or fit new boilers if they have been damaged by the internal water build-up so caused.

If you have either a 'Combi' or condensing boiler (both can be similarly afflicted) then I urge you do like me - drill a small vent in the pipe just below the sump, and let the water escape when the ouside pipe freezes.
You will have to monitor the receptacle you place under it and empty as necessary, but it's a darn sight easier than either thawing out the pipe outside, or suffering boiler damage and a freezing house!

When the danger of freezing has passed, simply block the vent hole with a small self-tapper and PTFE tape - works for me....... "

I have a non condensing boiler (ideal W2000),it's over 30 years old and in that it has broken down once which was a £1 "O" ring seal,it has no fan,no pcb,etc.Ok it might not be the most economical boiler in the world but it just hangs on the wall providing heat and hot water without any dramas.

I have a non-condensing boiler I got via fleabay for £29 in 2006. It was still in the original box, never been used, someone had been "meaning to fit it" for 2 years. Replaced the gas valve about 5 years ago and put some high temp sleeving on the ignition lead to stop it tracking to the casing about 2 years back....

AND I have an Aarrow inset multi-fuel boiler stove that runs on waste packaging timber I get FOC.

Well that was that then I guess

We'll have to wait for this summers "record heat wave" next..........yeah look out for the second Wednesday in August when temperatures "smash" all previously held records by 0.25 deg C

I did learn one thing, wives don't like being in the back of a Citroen whilst carrying out a controlled handbrake turn, in the snow, near the neighbours' new car Daughters quite like it though

I'm also a bit late to this one... The Duster proved to be excellent in the snow.

We had about 4" down here and it lasted a long 2 days. The Duster drove almost if the snow wasn't there, not a hint of slippage. None of that sphincter clenching when you hit a bit of slush and the car slips or wheel spins a little, it just drove straight and true all the time! Well, other than when I turned the TC & ESP off on a few quiet corners and kicked the arse end out a few times. Well impressed.
