3.0Hdi

Post by piglet »

I've been looking at the A4 with 3.0 Tdi but just discovered there was a 3.0 Hdi in the 407 & the C5, cheaper than the QuattroA4
It would seem that the PAS/Ford engine also has ended up in Landrovers & Jags
Anyone had any experience of these?
What can possibly go wrong?

No experience with them, no. My understanding though is that the 3.0 HDi V6 replaced the 2.7 HDi V6 for only the last few months of 407 production. The 3.0 was more fuel-efficient and more powerful than the 2.7 - but 407s with the 3.0 are not exactly common.

I can't find any common problems with that engine, although there seems to be a detuned version in Boxers/Jumpers which suffers ecu issues.

The 2.7 HDi was talked about on here years ago and the general feeling was that it was a bit scary whilst offering little more over the 2.2. Cambelt and Aux Belt changes would be expensive if using a garage and I guess general maintenance would be more difficult through lack of room etc. fuel economy would be more petrol-like.

They never really hit the news in terms of them being a nightmare though (like the Vauxhall V6 effort) so maybe they're ok. You can't beat the sound of a V6 diesel in my opinion :)

Don't, I'll get all hot & unnecessary.

Yes, the PAS 3.0 is rare but the 2.7 looks plentiful, comparing specs on Parkers 2.7Hdi 407 coupe vs 3.0Tdi A4 Avant they are almost the same, except 2WD vs 4WD & price.
440Nm 202hp,,, sounds nice
Front drive only might be a bit hopeless with extra torque.

Bailes wrote: JLR have a huge issue with these engines in both 2.7 and 3.0 format destroying bottom ends, usually because a shell has spun. However I couldn't find one case of a Peugeot having the issue even though they were both made to the same spec on the same line. The only difference between them the JRL versions had a larger baffled sump and uprated cooling system.
Could that just be a function of how many units JLR have sold compared to PAS?
