Viewing 2nd hand cars - the Camera does lie....

Post by Welly »

The state of second hand cars is shocking! despite the 'just washed' photos in the adverts :frown:

We're* looking at a small city-type car for around £1,500.00 - £2,000.00 and for what most advertisers would consider "excellent condition" I would consider scrap yard fodder :frown:

"Service History" - ha ha ha ha ha ha

Don't get me wrong I'm not expecting a perfect 2nd hand car but what I'd like is evidence that the thing has been looked after at least.

'Cambelt' and 'Servicing' apparently all get 'checked' at the MOT so that's alright then :?

Peugeot 107's and Citroen C1's are all mega over-priced and under cared for because: popular car innit.

And since when did a 17 year old shitter become 'worth' £650.00 :frown:

I'm not looking locally either I've been to Coventry, Milton Keynes and possibly London if I get a call back  The quest continues but very disheartening.

Luck with that.

There are some decent buys out there - 'our' recent 2.2 406 GTX Estate seems pretty good - but there's no shortage of ratbags either.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

If you're looking at 107's, C1's and others in the 60+ mpg group, you'll pay for that.
I think also why their prices stay up is that they're quite reliable. Toyota did most of the
design work them, and the Aygo. One of my neighbour's has an Aygo, 2006 model, bought from
new. I asked the owner what mpg she gets. About 60. Any problems with it. None, just service items.
She's not really a get under the bonnet person. I checked the DVLA MOT History.
Year on year, the car just keeps passing the MOT. Only advisories ever, pads getting low, a tyre
showing some perishing.

Base price for an early C1, 107 is about £1,000.

Me, I'd go for a Yaris.

Been trying to get a Renner Twingo approx 2008/9 I've done a fair bit of homework and spoke to two Renner specialists and the Twingo seems like a little hero to own. Only downsides I can find are weeping water pumps and cambelt needing doing every 72K or 5 years (many would not bother with this).

I did have a squint at Yaris's but look at them they're gopping :frown:

Daughter_Welly is a little gem herself I was trying to find her something a bit different but it aint easy.

Was the 107 / C1 / Aygo not the car that some driving schools banned the use of because of poor visibility due to the MASSIVE pillar between the rear quarterlight windows and the rear windscreen? I think they're hideous little things anyways, but that's just my opinion. They're all designed as "city cars"; shopping trolleys, and not particularly great for getting out on the motorway.

I'd rather pick something that isn't too uneconomical around town, but still has enough poke and road-holding ability to not suck when driving between cities on our nation's glorious non-potholed road network.

The 206 is a nice looking little car, and the 207 isn't too bad either (the 206 was defintely prettier, like the 406 was compared to the 407). Mostly a city car but a decent all-rounder as well. Don't go for anything smaller than a 1.4 petrol on these. Unfortunately insurance can be high on these. My lad wound up going for a 1.8 Toyota Celica Mk.7 rather than a 206CC 1.6 because the insurance costs were stupidly much higher for the Peugeot (which is intended as a small family car) than they were for the Toyota (which is intended as a sports car). As insurance quotes vary wildly from person to person and from area to area, you may find this is not the case for Daughter_Welly. The 206CC is a neat choice too, for the folding metal hardtop - just make sure it works properly before buying.

Mk 1 Focus 1.6 is an awesome little beast, but a bit older than the Twingo you're looking at (between 1998 and 2005), and not too bad for insurance. Fun handling and not very thirsty either. Can be had for under £1k but watch for rust. The 1.6 has surprising amounts of poke (100 HP) with the power mostly lower down the rev range, so it can be quick to accelerate at lower speeds, but can struggle a bit when overtaking on the dual carriageway. The 1.8 and 2.0 engines were stronger, but heavier, which made the handling worse. The Mk 2 Focuses were more boring to look at, but a bit less prone to rusting.

Actually the Celica Gen.7 is pretty awesome in most regards too, if the insurance doesn't flat-out block that from happening. They were produced as late as 2006, and there were two 1.8 petrol engine choices (VVT-i, which is 140 HP, and VVTL-i, which is 190 HP). The boot is a hatchback, and very spacious; it's surprisingly practical. The rear seats are spacious enough for actual adult human beings to sit in - less space than there is in the 406 Coupe but a lot more space than you'd get in a Jaguar XK). Not bad on fuel, easy to drive and park, and there were plenty of them made and exported, so there are always spares kicking about in scrappers if you need them. And they're fun to drive, and very striking to look at (though it's a bit of a marmite look - you love it or you hate it). I've driven Brian's one a bit and I feel a bit conspicuous in it compared to the 406 Coupe, but it is a different class of car altogether.

Yes, from day 1 of the Yaris, I've thought exactly that.

It's just that when I realised that they don't have cambelts that need changing,
camchain wear is very rare, reliability first class, economical....
I began to think..., maybe they're not so awful looking after all.

I guess the 206CC is high insurance in case you flip it over? could bump your head on something (like the Tarmac at 60mph :o ).

I dunno it's a bloody nightmare sifting through all the model variations and reading up about whats good & bad. The Yaris appears to suffer stretched/jumping Cam Chains if servicing skipped (which it will be as it gets older).

What I liked about the Renner was it's simple and has a well-proven (if old tech) engine which seems to not give many complaints.

Urgh.....

I did notice around 2006 the Yaris was facelifted to be 'not so gopping' so could be a contender......

They are to new, that's the problem  In the last year I have bought two 406 Hdi estates, one for £350 and the other £400, we have done over 10k miles in the £400 pound one and nothing serious has gone wrong and the same with the other one. I had to do a few jobs on them when I bought them but nothing eye watering.

I think they are probably the best car Peugeot ever made, they just don't go wrong.

I know exactly the feeling. Just sold my Megane 250 for something cheaper...

Cars not described correctly in ads - "Full service history" but when you get there it's patchy at best. Also, maybe i'm skewed but my definition of "great condition" doesn't reflect that of half the sellers out there...

Ended up with a Clio 182 Cup - one owner, full service history - everything as described. Was driving the 406 in the interim - I've missed that car, but jeeeez it feels old now :(
