Welly drives in that Germany, Caution: Mercedes content
Just spent the last 4 days in North Germany where we flew into Hamburg to collect our Hire Car to visit Welly_Junior.
At the hire desk the previously booked VW Pisshat / Insignia were unavailable so I was offered some alternatives; the most attractive of which was a C-Class Merc for the reasonable addition of €24.00 for the 4 days this was on top of the €67.00 Hire fee I'd already booked so approx €91.00 for 4 days.
We had a nice time visiting North Germany and returning to Hamburg for a day but as this is a car forum let me show you the motah:
A 2017 C Class 180T 9-speed Auto with 500 KM's on the clock:
It was pretty torquey and seamed to have plenty of go in it. Later research showed in to be a 1.6 4 cylinder pez turbo with direct injection. 154 bhp and 180+ torques, it seamed to suit the car well to be fair.
Interior quality high, leather stitched dash and all with a high-end feel, seats were a cloth/alcantara combo:
That light bar thing in the roof showed the proximity of the car behind while reversing (so you could view this in the rear view mirror):
Twin sunroof with roly-blind thing:
Art Deco console anyone?:
Illuminating entry:
Convenient* Electric handbrake release:
Long bonnet took some getting used to but looks short here:
Overall mighty impressive car, very comfortable, very quiet and a good all-rounder. Electric boot hatch, switchable driving modes, switchable steering 'feel' modes, changeable ambient lighting colours...loads of stuff. To be honest I'm out of touch with modern cars and was a bit taken aback at all the gadgets and 'personalisation' available but the main thing was how composed the car was with excellent ride and handling and brakes you'd only need to wave a feather at the pedal.
Other things that impressed was the Automatic High Beams you'd select 'high beam' and the LED headlights would only extend the beam if nothing was coming the other way like it could see oncoming traffic - and it worked well when the high beams came on they sort of 'searched' out and gave a HUGE viewing range. Also the blind spot detection system work well and would warn you if you indicated too soon whilst another car was in your 'area'.
Driving in Germany is a piece of cake, everyone drives with courtesy and sticks to the speed limits where indicated. All the traffic moves around town seamlessly and I saw no road rage, no under-taking and it was all very pleasant even in the busy Hamburg centre. Even if you make a mistake and need to change lanes at short notice it was as if other cars anticipate this and simply let you in with no drama (see UK for comparison ). Verdict: it all works nicely.
Conversely on arrival back in Luton last night and within 5 minutes of driving some arse in an Insignia was darting in and out and undertaking / entering a roundabout far too fast and bothering others. Got me thinking how we do 'driving' all wrong here, and we do, it's all me me me and then get all hissy when it doesn't work out and you 'lose' the 2.5 seconds you thought you'd gained. Slow down everyone and merge in turn
You're bound to ask so on the Autobahn I did do a 160 KMH (which is only* 100 MPH) but seamed right for the situation. Amazingly in 'gear 9' the engine was only turning at 2400 rpm at this speed.
Also note to Germany: can you please make your underground Car Parks a bit wider for access - gees
Sorry a bit waffly

Interesting. I'll resist Photo shopping the taxi sign onto the Merc this time.
Some clever gizmos there, but a few seem to be tech for the sake of it, guess the marketing peoples like it.
The handbrake release is right up there with auto dash illumination as a serious contender for the Darwin award IMO.
Agree with you the Germans are mostly better behaved on the roads and will usually give way to anyone that indicates.
You enjoyed better driving conditions than my last couple of trips to the Fatherland. Last summer it seemed like every bit of Autobahn in Southern Germany was being repaired at the same time. Dussledorf was crazily busy last October too.
Good read though.

So it didn't burst into flames then?
9 speed gearbox? Is that all they could fit in? The fake wood looks like 1970's MFI, that fake wood you used to glue on with evo stick. The name of which temporarily escapes me. Probably looks better in the flesh.
It's plush, plush, plush, I'd love one but stuff being responsible for it once the warranty runs out. The buzz on Mercs just now (according to bods like John Cadogan etc.) is unreliable electrics and defective gearboxes (plus appalling after-sales but that might just be Oz.)
You'd soon get used to all the toys, the yoyo has a welcome screen but it's long sinced dropped below my awareness threshold, just something else to wait for before I can actually drive the thing.
Oddly, the handbrake release is in exactly the same place as the bonnet release on the yoyo (ready to go and... BOING! Oh god dammit! gets out and closes bonnet)

I've been kind of sort of maybe thinking about replacing the Volvo at some point and after this Merc experience and my previous interest in C-Classes anyway i thought I'd toddle over to the HJ website to see what gives with these here Mercs and what they're like to own:

Verdict: No thanks. Must look harder
I give up with modern-ish cars FFS

you know what a Subaru Outback is already on my 'would' list after seeing a 5th Gear TV comparison between the Volvo V50 T5 and the Subaru where, err, the Volvo was embarrassed in every department

For years the French have been leading the way with bizarre electrical problems but evidently the Germans are catching up.steve_earwig wrote:But, but but... It's all lies!!!Fnar.14-9-2012: Strange problem of indicators flashing the wrong side.
Anyway, being German: it's supposed to do that because if it wasn't supposed to do that then they wouldn't have designed it that way.
I'll be after one of these next

3.0 V6 from about 2013 seem to be the ones to go for. Apparently the materials are cheaper from the 2015 facelift. The 2.7 can be had for about £6k now but if it's a 2.7 then you might as well have it in a 407 for about a third of the money, but my 2.2 is only 0.2s slower to 60.
Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Conversely...
My 407 is still sub-83k (miles) so it seems like a silly idea to part with something so young* and rarely driven. Still working fine, if you ignore the bloody ABS sensors, which seem to need replacing every other month (eBay specials).

Is that good or bad? HJ couldn't find much to say but usually he slags PSA off left, right and centre so that probably translates as "excellent".Captain Jack wrote:Conversely...

mmm I think you need to be careful reading reviews of 'special' models like the GTi because owners become that affectionate about them they forgive a lot more than other people would and consequently prefer to sing about the good bits......
