Thank you all again for your comments and support.

Just spoken to Mrs Doggy, who's down there right now visiting and has succeeded in getting him to eat some chicken, first food he's touched since Saturday.
He's got bald patches everywhere and is obviously still feeling sore. We have to be cautious for a few more days as there is still risk of infection or his internal plumbing separating, but it's all looking positive.

I'm guessing he'll also end up with the Cone Of Shame?

Scratches behind the ear and belly rubs from all of us. For Rufus, obviously.

"I felt really bad, got shoved in the car and taken to vets of evil where I was tortured mercilessly and now they've put the Funnel of Fear on me!! :( :( "

My mad ex, a veterinary nurse wannabe, called them an Elizabethan collar, not sure if that was official or anything, here they're just a funnel. I've never had one on a dog but on the cats I have to resist the urge to point, laugh and call them "flower pot". Teatime had one when he had his eye done, he just treated it as another problem to overcome.

We had a cat who, whenever we put a collar on him, or the vet gave him the Cone of Shame, he would just flop on to his side and refuse to move until you removed it. Same cat used to suck his thumb throughout his whole adult life, right from when he was a kitten purring all the while. The big baby.

One of the two dogs we used to have had the CoS once; he would be constantly bumping into things while wearing it - he never seemed to get used to the extra "THING" around his head. He was bloody delighted when it came off though! :cheesy:

A bit of a setback yesterday, he took a downturn and they had to draw a lot of crud out of his stomach.
We don't know if is a one-off as a result of the surgery or whether it's a sign of undetected problems elsewhere.
Today's news is inconclusive too.
He's got the COS at the moment to stop him pulling out the nasal tube they're feeding him with, but it seems he can still sneeze and get rid of it.
Still keeping everything crossed, but as it stands just now it's unlikely Mrs Doggy will want to go away next week.
We're not due to leave until Wednesday morning, so anything can happen.

Yes, hope it works out well, we had a similar problem a few days before we went away only it was with the car, not so emotional more annoying.

Wife & daughter are off to visit him in a few minutes, while I relax* trying to get the car ready just in case. To do:
Bodge lower condenser pipe onto pipework to evaporator, re-gas & hope.
Remove No.2 injector, replace copper seal
Swap middle pipe & back box
Oil change
Rear wiper blade
Decide if we're going
Get Euros
Book ferries / overnight stops
European breakdown cover?
