1.6HDi coming our way - Please Help!

Post by Welly »

There's a distinct possibility* that the ex-FIL's Citroen C4 is going to fall into the hands of Mrs_Welly :o :?

MIL can't get on with it as it's too big and too complex and has already twatted it pretty much all-round in just a few weeks.

It's a 2010 top of the range semi-auto with 30,000 miles and probably £2,000.00 as a sort of family exchange deal thing, they paid £8K for it in 2013.

Now I'm aware of complaints about the 1.6 but I've never took too much notice because: Diesel but what are the pitfalls and what can I do to help prevent OMG ENGINE CHAOS. Do the the turbo's fail and the engine goes runaway? I'd hate to think of Mrs_Welly in a runaway diesel with auto* box

They cannot be used for short journeys. If they don't get good runs you will run into issues in no time at all.

If it's out of warranty then take it somewhere reputable and have the EGR and DPF removed. Will help with a lot of long term issues.

Look into using a small out of two stroke oil mixed in with the diesel. It has to be mineral based and low smoke. Lubricates the fuel system and assists with a more thorough burn of the diesel. Have a Google about it!

Oh, oil changes every 6k/6 months. National Tyres will do an oil change for £40!

Cheers for the info, it will be used locally but quite good runs i.e about 8 miles but straight onto a 60mph road mostly and then I'd use it at weekends and try and get it out more. I know it's not ideal but its a way of getting her some new wheels and keeping the car in the family (her Father liked the car a lot etc..). It'll probably save us a bit in running costs, cheap tax, good mpg etc (if it doesn't keep going wrong).

The French Car Forum seems to recommend:

Checking the injector mounting studs/bolts as these become loose and indirectly pollute the oil.

Loads of oil changes (I could do this every 6 months).

Clean/check the mesh filter on the Turbo oil feed (or remove the mesh?).

Blank the EGR.

Cross your fingers.

I know this would be the LAST car I would pick but events have changed and I just need to be prepared, I'm feeling it must be possible to avoid problems through increased maintenance.

Oh and it seems the DV6 doesn't eat it's own oil but rather breaks the turbo and contaminates the whole oil system. Turbo failure mostly attributed to extended/missed servicing it seems.

Change the engine oil at least twice as often as recommended, the turbo failure common to these engines is due to oil starvation as it becomes sludgy and clogs the filter on the oil feed to the turbo. The best thing to do is remove the filter, its in the oil inlet pipe to the turbo.

Never saw that one coming.

As everyone says the filter in the turbo oil supply line is the time bomb.
It is said that on late night journeys when you have more month left than money, it can be heard ticking.

The other thing is that as a life-long Fen lander, it'll never have heard of a HILL.

Use it for work one day a week yourself, this will have many benefits:

Blow the cobwebs out :supafrisk:
Reduce your fuel bill :D
Stave off DPF issues 8)

Thanks for the inputs!

Apparently it started life as a Motorbility car, and then as Doggy says it's been pootling around on dead-flat roads at 30 mph for the last two years, I've no idea if it's ever been serviced, or by whom, and knowing most establishments in Skegness it's probably just had "oil" replaced rather than the special grade low ash stuff, if at all. So if* we do get it I'll have to jump straight onto the oil side of things.

That sounds a perdy good idea, the only drawback is that once a week Mrs. Welly will be taking his Ovlov turbo nutter mobile to work... (and she might not give it back  )

No chance of that she HATES driving it, apparently it is "cronky" (gearbox) and the ride is "terrible" (Dynamic* chassis).

To be fair I wouldn't mind laying the Ovlov up at the weekends and using the Shitrun instead (it'll use 150% less fuel for a start) :supafrisk:

Oh. Ah well, so long as it's not because it's "the wrong colour" or something equally as daft.

SOunds like a better plan then, especially as it makes fuel rather than uses it...

Might be OK.....

.....Mrs Doggy never found out what happened when the 216GTI Twin Cam got beyond 5500 RPM, or what happened when you floored the 200SX.

I do about 8K/yr and she does about 5K.

I start digging through the bill of sale we've got at home......It was bought in 2013 with 9800 miles and scribbled on the Invoice was "Service and Warranty less trade-in equals blah blah.." this was from a second hand dealership in Skeggy. Now there is no way they would've changed the oil on a 10K car when Citroen say it's every 20K is there?

So it looks like they would've assumed it's been changed at purchase and thought it be 'ok' for a further 20K cos that's the intervals so 2 years and 20K later I think its NEVER had an oil change so still has the stuff the factory put in 5 YEARS ago  :(

I think it might be prudent drop the sump to clean it out and clean the oil pick up?

The 1.6HDi has a design floor where you can't drain all the oil in the sump and you end up with sludge. It's probably a wise idea to clean out the sump. There are modified sumps available but I haven't done much research. I wonder if my DV5 has the same sump?

I personally would drop the sump, clean it then change the turbo oil filter and do 2 oil changes within 1000miles. Then hope and prey no damage as been done.

It's worth saying I would only use Citreon/Peugeot oil and fuel filters. They are double pleated in both directions and of a much better quality then any other filter even from the likes of Bosch.

If you're going to use it as a daily Welly then a remap would probably be a good idea top!

There's talk of removing the little filter for the turbo, Peter N also said the same, I think it's something discussed on the FCF? the oil has already been through the main filter anyway.
